How to: Lose your Followers in 9 days

howtoloseaguyin10daysIn the movie, “How to lose a guy in 10 days”, Andie (Kate Hudson) got a guy (Matthew McConaughey) to fall in love with her and tried to get rid of him by using classic dating mistakes made by women, all in 10 days.

What she didn’t know is that she almost missed her true love for a magazine article.

While I am pretty sure you would not find true love with the next few common twitter mistakes I am going to share, I am certain you would gain a few more followers by not committing them.

Day 1. Your updates must always and only be about pushing your product

You must not talk about anything else but your product. If not, your followers might miss your selling message. You should also repeat your tweets at least 5 times a day because your followers might not have caught your update the first time. This is the only way for them to remember you, or for them to remember to unfollow you.

Day 2. Your tweets can be inconsistent with what you said yourself to be

Yes you said you are an online marketing expert but no one said you have to show it. Just act like an average Joe and people would still believe you. Even if you represent a particular Brand does not mean you need to talk in the Brand’s voice. Your followers would not notice it anyway. Even if they do, they would not care, would they?

Day 3. Do not connect with your followers even if they tweet you

To maintain your superiority above others, you should not talk to your followers directly. Act like you are a non-living system working behind the tweets. Do not go down to the personal level as your followers might treat you like a friend and not like a professional. This is not your intention. You are not here to make friends; you are here to make money and a network of people you do not know. Keep that in mind and you are on your way to an exponential downturn in your twitter journey.

Day 4. Tweet about how you are going to hit 1000 followers by tonight

Having a great following is definitely something worth celebrating for. Why not share it with the rest of your 900+ followers? Let them know that they are just the quenchers of your thirst for greater popularity. The numbers are certainly more important than your connection with each and every one of them. Just don’t be surprised if you never hit 1000 followers.

Day 5. Tweet excessively, every minute if possible

Your followers are susceptible to so many tweets a day; they would not be able to catch your tweets if you just tweet every hour about your product! Hence, you should update every minute and if possible, every second so that their homepage only has your tweets. This will also increase the probability of them retweeting your updates! This is especially easy with auto-tweeting. You might get such a reaction from them that they might unfollow you while pulling their hair out. Awesome if you are selling a hair product!

Day 6. Unfollow your followers

This is a cheap trick. Everyone knows it but it works doesn’t it? Your followers have too many followers themselves that they wouldn’t notice your unfollowing. So go on and do it for your own good! Who uses auto unfollow anyway?

Day 7. Connect with your followers like a stalker

Haven’t you heard?  People love to hear praises and crave for attention. Hence, it might be better to give them the attention they need and best of all, attention they do not need. Tell them you are constantly camping at their blog for the newest post. Compliment them on how good they look in pictures and would love to see more of them on and offline. Talk to them even if they are trying to end the conversation. You never know, they might be too shy and never want to talk to you again so cherish the time you have!

Day 8. Complain about how your followers are following you when you are not a fan of them

Some followers to you are like pests to crops. You are not a fan and you just don’t understand why they have to follow you. Go on and let them know by tweeting them so that they can feel humiliated and under appreciated. Everyone loves a rebel.

Day 9. Be insensitive to your followers

Everyone has the right to voice his or her opinions. If you think that a particular follower is a loser, you should be able to tweet about it. If you think that people are too concerned about certain issues, you can go ahead and warn them to stop. So what if they feel hurt or angry? Arguments only make tweeting more fun! Losing a follower or two won’t hurt.
