To all of our delight, Twitter is partially up again after about one and a half hour of outrage. According to Twitter status update, it could be a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. DoS attack is an attempt to prevent a website from working properly, denying users from its resource. There are several methods of attack and it could be done by anyone. We would be waiting for Twitter to determine the exact cause.
Here’s what Twitter said,
“We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.
Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.”
No matter what was the problem, we are glad that Twitter is back on (partly at least)! It was hard not being able to tweet about Twitter’s service disruption.
We will update on what was the cause once Twitter gives us an answer, check back later Tweeple!
Our Updates
1. Twitter is still defending against the attack. We currently can’t log in to Twitter’s homepage but can tweet using 3rd party applications. Attacks like these are usually difficult to fight against, we will just have to be patient.
2. Some tweeters reported that they can access Twitter.com and send out tweets. We still can’t though!
Update by Twitter Status (9:46a): As we recover, users will experience some longer load times and slowness. This includes timeouts to API clients. We’re working to get back to 100% as quickly as we can.
