Research Says Most Tweets are POINTLESS [Video]

twitter-inactiveHow are people using and consuming Twitter?

If you caught our previous post on “Top 5 Twitter Videos“, you’d probably guess it.

Is Twitter about talking to no one and everyone?

Peeranalytics goes hardcore and did a scientific research on this. The results are pretty interesting.

Peeranalytics took 2,000 tweets from the public timeline (in English and in the US) over a 2-week period from 11:00am to 5:00pm (CST) and captured tweets in half-hour increments. Each tweet is classified into 6 different categories, namely:

1. News

2. Spam

3, Self-Promotion

4. Pointless Babble

5. Conversational

6. Pass-Along Value

The Winners
1. Pointless Babble 40.55%

Twitter has been trying to push its new concept with a Twitter 101 guide and a completely new homepage. However, it seems like Twitter’s old concept of telling everyone “what you are doing” (or rather your random thoughts) is still lingering in the Twittersphere. Don’t you feel tired shouting at no one and everyone?

2. Conversational 37.55%

Just 3 per cent behind all that babble, let’s hope Twitter can brew more conversations in time to come.

3. Pass-Along Value was third 8.7%

Information sharing is the greatest beauty of Twitter.

Some Thoughts

Indeed, Twitter has not been much of a social tool compared to Facebook or even Plurk. Would it help if we keep the pointless tweets to ourselves and spark more meaningful conversations?

Hmm but if no one starts blabbering something, would the conversations even start?

Here’s a video (from our previous post) to depict Twitter in real life.
