This is part of the series: Who’s going to break through Google’s strong walls?
Remember how it was all good with your best friend until she started copying your style and falling for the same guy?
That’s exactly what Apple and Google are experiencing for the past few years. When your friend becomes a threat, she is no longer a friend (even when she is your enemy’s enemy). So what exactly made this friendship turn sour?
If you have not been keeping yourself in the loop, here are the reasons why these two giants are not meant to be:
Google Chrome OS
Chrome OS launch in 2010 would not only threaten the dominating (93.04% share) Windows OS, but also the number 2 Apple’s Mac OS (4.86%). For one, it is promising a lot and if it does deliver, it spells trouble for the other OS players.
“the world’s new Chrome OS is build with speed, simplicity and security and allows its users to get into the web in seconds upon starting up the system. Best of all, users need not deal with irritating viruses because Google has completely redesigned the underlying security architecture of its OS. Say bye to viruses, malware and security updates. And a new competition will bring a lot of benefits for us, the consumers.”
Android
Google’s Android though not gaining too much ground, remains to be a menace to Apple’s dominating iphone OS. This is especially so as it is expecting 18 Android phones from 8 to 9 manufacturers by year’s end. If more and more manufacturers decide to roll out only Android powered handsets, it might have a chance of gaining a big piece of the mobile OS share.
Google Voice
Have any ideas what’s Google Voice? If no, you got to check out the video below.
With such a powerful product, who would reject it? Well, Apple. It also took off all applications that take advantage of Google Voice’s functionality. Could the reason be a conflict of interest between Google and AT&T, iphone’s US carrier? Or is it a result of growing hostilities between the two?
Google CEO leaves Apple board
Seeing an increasing overlap of Google’s business with Apple’s, it is expected when Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google resigned from Apple’s board. In fact, many said it is close to 2 years overdue when Google first launched its Chrome browser.
“Eric has been an excellent board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple board member will be significantly diminished.”
What Google and Apple have is a love-hate relationship. When Apple looks at Google, it is starting to see another Microsoft. Will Apple turn things around and start breaking through Google’s walls for a change? We shall see.
