Facebook’s Twitter Background Looking Suspicious

fbEven though Facebook and Twitter are considered as two different platforms, they are pretty much made up of social communities focused on connecting with people.

With each platform trying to gain a foothold in the social media sphere, there is more or less a sense of rivalry between the two. Facebook’s acquisition of FriendFeed and launch of real time searches and Facebook Lite have sparked hints that a battle between the two hottest sites may soon erupt.

Today, we happened to stumble upon Facebook’s Twitter Background and thought something fishy may be going on.

Normal view

fb1

This is what we normally see – what seems like an airplane soaring up the sky with Facebook’s familiar blue corporate color as background. But what’s hidden underneath the column of tweets that covered almost half of the background image?

What’s hidden beneath?

If you click on the logo (or select “view background” if you’re using Firefox), you get to unveil the hidden picture. Ta-dah! A Twitter bird with a Facebook tag hanging over its neck. I smell a hint of rivalry coming from Facebook.

Could that bird represent Twitter? What is Facebook trying to say in this image?

Wow, a very nice Easter egg. In my own perspective, I guess this is a homage to the Twitter bird. I can't wait to look at other prominent Twitter account! A great find, Willis. Certainly a great find.

It's not a take on the Twitter bird. It's a reference to the quotes that were featured at the bottom of Facebook pages a few years ago. From Wedding Crashers, “I don't even know what a quail looks like,” and from Top Gun, “Too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns.” That's why you have a quail and two fighter jets.
