REVIEW: Yahoo Meme Put To Test

yahoo-meme

We have been using Yahoo meme for a few days now and as promised, we are going to tell you what we think about it. Twitter has set the bar considerably high for any new micro-blogging entrants. For meme, it’s either impress the users or fail.

We are going to make a head to head comparison between meme and Twitter but as usual, you have the final say to what you think and prefer. What’s important is that you share it with the rest of us!

Let”s get started!

1. Design & Layout

Displayed very clearly by the snapshots below, meme’s layout is much less cluttered and more sophisticated compared to Twitter’s. The visuals, which can be uploaded directly as your updates, add to the overall aesthetics. Twitter, on the other hand, only allows text and links making it less pleasing to the eye.

However, it is good to note that meme does not allow profile customization. That means no fancy backgrounds and themes to play with and therefore, less flexibility.

2. Convenience

tweetieWe can practically tweet anywhere using mobile Internet and text messages. Got something to say? Just tweet it. It’s that easy and it’s one of the reasons why Twitter is so successful.

By allowing videos and pictures to be posted directly (plus no text limit), it is extremely unfriendly to third party applications. Without these applications, slow adoption and infrequent use of meme would not be surprising.

Obviously, meme is willing to give up a whole lot for videos, pictures and space.

3. Purpose

Many social networking platforms started off with pure social networking goals in mind. But it doesn’t stop businesses from creeping in on social media. We understand that Twitter is already widely used as a business tool.

Could meme be another tool for businesses to exploit? This is especially so when meme made reposting such an easy and addictive task. Content has a lot of potential to spread virally on this new micro-blogging platform.

4. Features

This is probably the most important part of the review.

Both platforms advocate simplicity. Once you get the hang of Twitter’s conventions, you are pretty much set. Its features are welcoming-ly limited and third party applications made tweeting possible anywhere. As for meme, some users might appreciate its effort to separate text, picture, video and audio postings, making the process dummy proof. Also, there’s virtually no hassle when it comes to following and unfollowing people on meme.

Video Meme

A strong advantage meme has over Twitter is that it allows users to view pictures and videos directly from it site. Content is more likely to be viewed as exposure increases. Its repost counter is another amazing feature that encourages viral activities. Be careful though, reposting is so easy you might just end up spamming! (Yup, guilty here.)

But coming back down a bit, buzz-making has always been Twitter’s forte and its trending topics is by far one the most admired feature across all social media platforms. Meme made an weak attempt with its “popular” page, drawing attention to content that has been reposted most. We are not too impressed by that.

5. Future?

yahooWith its third party apps and users monetizing way before it, most of us are getting impatient waiting for Twitter to start earning some decent money. Unlike Twitter, meme has the backing of Yahoo, which earns most of its revenue selling ad spaces on its search engine.

In other words, meme can focus on providing a great service and experience without having to worry about money. Yahoo also owns Delicious and Yahoo Buzz and both can come in useful when we talk about integration in the future.

But of course all this is not enough to spell trouble for Twitter.

Twitter has plenty of supporters behind its back and it has also been talking about its plans for monetization. Its growth is so far impressive and is expected to last for quite some time.

There are also rumors going around that Google might purchase Twitter in the future. If this is ever going to be true, Twitter can just hand the business model problem to Google and focus on providing a better tweet experience to its users.

Summary

Yahoo meme is looking good and there isn’t any rational reason why we would NOT use this new micro-blogging site. Although Twitter is still our number one choice for micro-blogging activities, we suggest that you give meme a shot.

Try it and see if meme can steal you away from Twitter!

How is Yahoo Meme different from Tumblr?

  • acarlos1000

    Hi there,

Excellent Post, very good analysis, some feedback:

    1) On the Design part: Meme offers some Predefined Themes, you can find them at Settings>Themes

    2) Definitely this is a must have on any Social product to become popular, Meme already have an API integrated with Yahoo Query Language (YQL) platform, but no documentation yet.

Here is a cool example: To get all the info about your Meme, you can do the following Select Statement:

    SELECT * FROM meme.info WHERE name=’pennolson′;
    Link: http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/?q=SELEC…

And to get all your followers ordered by number of followers:

    SELECT * FROM meme.followers(100) WHERE owner_guid IN (SELECT guid FROM meme.info WHERE name=’pennolson′) | sort(field=”followers”) | reverse();

    LInk: http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/?q=SELEC…

    Hi there!

Yahoo meme is a micro-blogging site very much similar to Twitter, involving short updates.Tumblr is a blogging platform like Blogger and WordPress catering to longer entries. (:

    Hope this helps!

    Hi there!

Thanks for the insightful comments, especially with the API! Its true that meme has some predefined themes but we can't upload our own backgrounds. But I guess that's the approach of meme, profiles in Twitter are getting increasing neglected anyway. We should be expecting more themes when it is officially launched!

I am not too versed in APIs but from what I can see, meme seems to be much less developer friendly as they would need to incorporate visuals as well. Let's hope that's not the case though! (:

Hey, Sarah. I have been waiting for this review ever since you posted the original article yesterday. Thanks for the insightful provision of details as always.

I think that a new trend in social media is slowly developing these days. The faster you can convey a message — albeit shorter, the better. Thus, microblogging social media platforms such as Twitter, and recently, Yahoo Meme, were developed.

I guess that in the near future, we will be looking at super microblogging social media platforms that only contain special characters instead of words or sentences. What do you think? Is this plausible?

  • sarah_chong

    Hi there!

Thanks for the kind words. (: You are right, people's attention span is getting shorter and shorter thanks to video clips and microblogging. However, like how a kindle cannot replace the good old book, blog posts and articles still provide us with more value than the mere 140 characters. That's why most of them are linked to longer content! So little words just can't convey as much. I would say microblogging is more for short updates and broadcasting of interesting content elsewhere.

Similarly, super microblogging (love how you named it!) is definitely possible but I dont think it would be able to replace lengthy content. Actually, people are already replacing words and sentences as more visuals are being posted online (sometimes without caption even!). I guess some things find words and sentences unnecessary but for the rest, they are still important!

    (:
