Nokia Acquired Dopplr (And Wants To Build An Online Community)

nokia-dopplrNokia’s acquisition of Dopplr, the travel social network site has been confirmed but figures are still undisclosed.

It was explicitly stated that their reason for acquiring Dopplr is To build an online community using the expertise of the Dopplr team. Clearly, Nokia is setting sights on building a community that worships its brand.

The mobile maker giant did not explain further how they are going to do it and whether this new online “Nokia community” is going to be built within Dopplr is another question.

From Nokia’s press release:

“Dopplr has a team of seven people with offices in London and Helsinki. The Dopplr team brings to Nokia’s Services unit unique know-how in creating internet-based communities and showing their journeys, experiences and tastes collectively on the web.

The acquisition does not change the current Dopplr service which is available at Dopplr.com and on platforms where Dopplr is integrated.”

Nokia has taken a bold step in the social media marketing realm. Will they succeed?

Hey, Willis. I guess this is a very bold move for Nokia to venture into social media territory but rest assured that they will be in very good hands. The telecommunication giant surely did not hire Dopplr if the travel social network site did not have an ace up their sleeves, right?

It is indeed a bold move. And yes. Nokia should have planned something before acquiring Dopplr. I look forward to see how the plan evolves

Why invest the money in creating a new community (risky strategy) rather than finding innovative and relevant ways to integrate into existing communities? Are brands that lost for knowing how to weave into the existing social media fabric? Do users really want to manage another social network account?
