54% Of Companies Prohibited Employees From Social Media

No-Social-MediaA study conducted by Robert Half Technology has revealed some seemingly astonishing results.

The survey question is simple and specific: “Which of the following most closely describes your company’s policy on visiting social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, while at work?”

Out of the 1,400 CIOs surveyed, 54% completely prohibited their employees from any online social networking activities.

If you’re able to Twitter or Facebook during work, count yourself lucky!

So much for building a social media culture, seems like only 26% of companies believe in the benefits of personal social media use during work.

Nonetheless, there are compelling reasons for companies to prohibit social media use. The addictive nature of  Twitter and Facebook can definitely reduce work productivity, and sensitive information is at bigger risks of getting leaked.

For most companies to embrace social media may take quite awhile. There’s no standard policy to follow and culture cannot be created overnight.

Anyway, for those who are able to use social media freely during work, it is better to use them cautiously. Your employers might just be watching you on these social sites too.

Although it may sound a bit small, Willis, a hefty 26% isn't that bad. Remember the old maxim: big things come from small packages. I guess maybe these corporate players, or some other company that prohibits social media use, will go with flow immediately as soon as they see how beneficial it is to get connected in the social media worldwide community.
