Funny: What Is A Browser?

browser-iconsBefore you snort at this question, think about the countless number of people who are strangers to this term.

Most of us won’t be able to survive without it, but that does not mean we know what it is.

For most people, the first thing they see when they open up their browser is their search homepage. Who can blame them for mistaking Search Engines as Browsers?

What Google did some time ago was to ask over 50 passersby; randomly picked out from Times Square, New York a seemingly simple question,

“What is a Browser?”

Enjoy the results below and for the record, a browser is NOT a Search Engine.

To help people who are still wondering what a browser is, Google has just created a video that would hopefully clear some clouds.

There’s also a website to tell you which browser you are using and why it matters.

Thanks, Sarah. This post is both informative and insightful (with a twist of humor) at the same time. You can never blame other people if the associate the word “browser” with search engine because it is always the case in other people's computers. However, I find it good that at least some people were able to answer the question correctly.

P.S. Is this some kind of tactic by Google? Are they up to something? What do you think?

There was definitely some marketing incentives that motivated the street survey. It was also to see how many people know of Chrome browser. The survey was done quite some time ago while the video explaining what a browser is was released only a few days ago. I don't suspect anything big coming up (:

How can you honestly NOT know what a Web browser is?

i was surprised to learn that i could define what a “web browser” is. do i get a half a loathe?

I'm somewhat surprised that they offered multiple links at the end of the video instead of just a link to Chrome. They are also probably trying to get market data. If no one knows what a browser is, then marketing Chrome as a new “browser” is just going to make people think they are using Chrome by searching through Google.

I was expecting at least 30-40% to know what a browser is. But that just puts things into perspective.

It is funny that I should come across this as just this morning I asked my friend what browser she used. Her reply was Google….
