Twitter Growth Dips. End Of Its Limelight?

twitter-logo

Facebook’s additional 2 million unique visits last month, has certainly made Twitter’s statistic look grimmer.

Despite all the buzz surrounding its upcoming new features, for the months of July, August and September, Twitter’s unique visit growth rate has been below par.

So is Twitter’s show time over?

Hmm…I guess not. Listen to what I have to say.

Every website will experience a period of flat growth

Picture 32

Every website will experience a period of flat growth. From the graph, we can see a similar sticky period from Sept 08 to Nov 08, which was followed by robust growth until the recent 3 months when growth rate dipped again.

I chose to see this as a pattern. It is similar to how stock prices rise and fall, there will always be a series of dips and peaks but overall positive growth is likely in the long run.

It probably took something extraordinary to break away from the previous stagnation. Would Twitter’s new $100 million funding help this time?

well, twitter's 'learning phase' for new users is steep since most of the people i met can only grasp what twitter is really about and how to use it effectively often after more than a month. That is even AFTER reading those “twitter for dummies” articles :)

I experienced it myself. I do not know what to do UNTIL i know who's the right person to follow. And i don't get that information at twitter early on. It would be best if twitter can provide suggestion of people to follow based on people's experience all over the net (mining data from facebook's friend list for example?).

Anyway, here in Indonesia, after knowing what twitter can do, and what facebook does. I am positive that twitter will be the new trend. Most of us will get tired of using facebook after a certain while and only uses it to check something new (like what we did to email), while twitter will be used for constantly staying in touch with our peers.

    just an opinion :)

thanks for the great comment! Well, i think facebook will still stay because i see twitter and fb as 2 different types of social sites :)

It is, facebook will stay since it is a better way to reach out to our long lost friends or those that are not in our daily cycle focus (ie, people in our field/expertise).

Willis, this is a very useful post. This is a testament that even though you are one of the social media giants, you are not exempted from the constant cycle of peaks and drops that all trailblazing websites experience. However, I have faith in Twitter and I know it will come back up again without a hitch.
