STUDY: What Do Facebook and Twitter Users Want?

twitter_facebook_logoOnline ad network, Chitika found out from its own users what both Facebook and Twitter users want. Apparently, they want very different things!

No prize for getting it right but Twitter users sure can’t get enough of news, with over 28% of Twitter’s traffic directed to news sites. Movies sites came up next followed by technology and medical sites.

Over at Facebook, technology sites lead the way with 33% of the networking site referrals going there.

Statistics

Twitter

twitter

Facebook

facebook

What does this mean?

If this piece of finding can be generalized to most users, then businesses would have an easier time understanding how users consume information differently when on Facebook and Twitter.

We can quite safely assume that Twitterers love new information and happenings. If your business is promoting itself on Twitter, be sure to share timely news about your company and related topics. If you are selling kids’ toys, you can share news and fresh tips about children, toys and even parenting!

Be careful though, your target audience might not behave the same way as the general user population. Take this information and see if it’s consistent with your fans and followers’ preferences. Always track their response and work from there!

The use of Twiitter for news links is another indication that the Internet rather than newspapers and television is the future of news. More at http://newnewmediabook.com

    Dear Sarah

This is very interesting indeed. One concern I have before believing the stats you present is, however:

    1) did you control for any user demographics (e.g., age, gender)
    2) are user characteristics the same for Twitter and Facebook

Before we know how these factors may have influenced your results I am cautious about the data you present (percentages) across these two networks …. their possible statistical significance as well as magnitude still remains rather vague does it not?

Some even claim that Twitter for corporates is all about engagement:

and not necessarily sharing news. Any take on this?

    Thanks for your interesting post.

Ignition. The countdown started three years ago as the creative brainchild of three, talented individuals: William Rodgers, Adam Smith, and Scott Berman. Between them, they bring the strategy, vision, heartbeat, and fun to the biggest phenomenon to hit cyberspace since its invention. Blastoff will soon roar onto the scene. And the buzz is out-of-this-world.

Blastoff is the fun, easy, and free way to do everything you already do on the web, only better. Blastoff brings all of this and more right to your fingertips from a convenient, fully customizable homepage.

Why set your “sites” anywhere else?

If that wasn't good enough, Blastoff propels the online experience into hyperdrive by offering a unique internet shopping platform that actually pays its members for every purchase made through their Blastoff accounts. Savvy shoppers already know that online retail provides some of the best pricing and promotions around, including many transactions that are tax-free. Well, Blastoff combines those same great deals with cash-back bonuses of up to 15% on each purchase. And if you're like me, saving money on the stuff you buy all the time is what you live for.

While the advent of social networking sites is a great way to prove your cyber-worth, none of them actually reward you for being a social butterfly. With Blastoff, every time any of your friends shop online through their own Blastoff accounts, you get paid a commission on that sale.

If there was ever any excuse to network, this is it.
