Seniors Are Facebooking and YouTubing

bigstockphoto_A_Group_Of_Senior_People_Using_4732288If you are wondering what Grandpa and Grandma are up to recently, look no further than Facebook and YouTube.

How hip can they get?

We first found out that Internet users above 65 online shop more than us and now, they are engaging in social media more actively than before.

I knew this would happen when I see my dad, who is above 65 spend more time YouTubing than talking to me.

According to Nielsen Wire, 6 million more seniors are using the web than 5 years ago; mostly to check their Email. The Internet is also a good source of information for them.

What’s more interesting is that 50% of Senior users view and post pictures online (for stalking purposes?), making it the 5th top activity performed. Where else is best for that than Facebook? This might explain why it is the 3rd most visited online destination for seniors. YouTube follows closely behind at 4th place.

Are these results surprising to you?

those are some impressive statistics, i mean if you're that old what else can you besides explore the net =P, but seriously it shows how accessible the net is, via any means/age. But i think twitter is definitely in right now, ( for me at least ) i don't spend as much time fb/youtube.. Nevertheless great post and sorry for long comment ^_^.

hey dude. not worry about long comments. we love them :)

Anyways, for me, i still spend more time of fband youtube. Twitter can be alittle overwhelming at times.

This is great that more seniors are using facebook and taking advantage of how great the internet is.

This will also potentially open up a variety of new niches targeted at seniors on the web for people to take advantage of (speaking to those people that want to start an online business but are having trouble selecting a niche/target audience)

I do find it quite surprising that seniors are shopping more than those under 65!

And as Tunguy said – it's great that sites like facebook are obviously accessible to anyone of any age just about :)

Absolutely, if they are targeting them, they should also take note of navigation and button/tab sizes to cater to the old age (just like what paw paw mail did).

Haha as what Tunguy3n said, they probably have more free time to surf the net plus online shopping is more convenient for them! But it is surprising that they are getting so savvy.
