Social Media Forces Businesses To Go Two Way

social media2Marketing messages used to be one way, but things have changed with the rise of social media. It has given consumers the opportunity to connect with a brand, like they were friends.

Sparking off a conversation with @WholeFoods or @Starbucks isn’t uncommon. The brand is brought to life by employees handling the profiles. Such connection was hardly possible before the social media era.

There seems to be a popularity fight between businesses on the social sites. The more followers and fans you have, the more popular you look and the wider your reach.

But the real winner is the one that can grab the attention of consumers and turn that into sales.

Grabbing Attention

To grab consumers’ attention, it is essential for businesses to humanize their brand. Making it lively, entertaining and personal is all part of the deal. Relationships aren’t built overnight.  It requires constant and sincere interaction with the consumers. Traditional media was inadequate but not social media.

If businesses are willing to listen and improve, consumers would give them their attention. Both businesses and consumers benefit.

We see this happening more as this shift in media focus forces businesses to speak with consumers (it’s a good thing!). And those who don’t keep up would sooner or later be on the losing end.

Don’t be!

How good does it feel when a BIG brand responds to you right away when you talk to them through social media channels like FB and twitter? It shows that some businesses are finally using communication channels EFFECTIVELY. i.e. not being on hold on the phone for 30min+

It's sort of weird though isn't it, this sort of thing should have been happening years ago, starting with better phone service. At least some are starting to do a good job with social media. (my good experience was with Optus through twitter. I can bet if I called them my problem wouldn't have been solved right away but through twitter it was solved almost instantly and they called ME back)

You are spot on and many brands out there are doing very well. What surprises me though is how many of the new startups are ignoring this part. I write regularly about websites on my blog and generally post a Tweet hashtagging the website name, however, only in about 50% of instances do I receive comments from the founders or employees of said website. Any website out there should be monitoring Twitter and other social networks for mention of their name and do their best to participate.

they would argue that time is the issue. but I guess they could reply within a day or so. There are studies that revealed that small businesses aren't that into social media. maybe that is the reason why.
