The high possibility of hitting innocent pedestrians and causing a car crash might not be enough to deter drivers from drunk driving. What Texas County did this holiday season was to take the punishment a step further – public humiliation.
If legal punishment doesn’t work, I bet publishing the names of those charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) between Christmas and New Year’s Eve would!
The names would be published on District Attorney, Brett Ligon’s Twitter page, which currently has less than 500 followers.
The question now is not whether this method would actually work, but how fair it would be to those who could be wrongly accused.
As said by Houston defense attorney Paul Kennedy, “My question is should the DA dismiss a case against a motorist or should a motorist be acquitted by a jury of his peers, will Mr. Diepraam (County Vehicular Crimes Prosecutor- the guy who came up with the idea) offer a public apology on Twitter as well?”
