While most of us are preparing New Year resolutions and counting down to 2010, many marketers are thinking about the marketing channels to invest this coming year. Is social media part of your plan? If not, the four points below might sway your thinking.

1. Social Media ROI Is Proven
Social media helps companies make money. This awesome video by @equalman would be enough to convince you.

2. Big companies shifting to social media
Big companies are shifting to social media – just think about the number of big brands using Facebook and Twitter. Burberry’s Facebook trench coat campaign has been a rocking success and Pepsi had dropped its Super Bowl Ad to focus on a $20 million social media campaign.
Mashable wrote:
Rather than spending money on a Super Bowl ad, Pepsi will launch the Pepsi Refresh Project on January 13, 2010. At that time, users can submit their ideas to Pepsi for ways to refresh their communities, making the world a better place.
Voting will begin on February 1, 2010, and the projects that get the most votes will be funded by Pepsi. Pepsi expects to spend $20 million to fund thousands of projects.
3. Social Media Is Widely Used
Facebook has 350 million users and I’m guessing Twitter has at least more than 30 million users. From the recent Hitwise data, 5 out of the 10 top search terms are social media related. If social media doesn’t dominate the world, it at least dominates the web.
This video, again by @equalman has perfectly illustrated how social media is causing a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.
4. Social Media Is Not What You Think
If you’re feeling skeptical about social media, you can probably find some of your reasoning reflected on this post, 8 Reasons Why Businesses Avoid Social Media.
But social media is not what you think it is.
