Google News Now More Targeted

You can now further customize your Google news; making it more targeted and relevant to your search. When you see news that interests you, click on the star next to its title. This way, Google can alert you whenever there is an update or development.

Notice a star on the left of the title?

note the star

According to Google software engineer, Jude Britto,

“People can click on “stars” to mark groups of stories on preferred subjects to signal Google News to watch for updates or developments. When you star a story in Google News, it’s one way to let us know that you’re interested in that subject.”

Similar to Google Alert?

To a certain extent, yes, as both services provide targeted news feeds. Google alert keeps us updated with news revolving the keywords we set. The new Google “star”, on the other hand, keeps us updated particularly on a thread of news that interest us (e.g Singapore Airshow on social media).

Obviously, the new “star” service provides precise news updates, something only the online world can provide with proper algorithm. Take caution, traditional newspaper.
