Dumping someone can be tough, especially when we have to confront the person face to face. A survey reported by Reuters revealed that to avoid the awkwardness, many chose to do this over the Internet; with 34% of the people, out of the 2,000 surveyed, using Email as the primary breakup tool.
Unsurprisingly, social sites are the next favorite. 13% of the people surveyed changed their Facebook status to “single” without the other party’s prior knowledge. Another 6% chose to announce the breakup through Twitter. That’s about 20% of the people dumping their partners through social sites!
“Digital Dumping will soon take over when it comes to ending a relationship,” said Sean Wood, Marketing Manager for DateTheUk dating service for whom the survey was carried out.
How would you initiate a break up?
Personally, I think breaking up via Email is still okay but doing it on Facebook or Twitter is both cruel and cowardly. Isn’t it even more awkward if friends found out about the breakup before your soon-to-be ex-partner? He/she might just launch a war on your wall or Twitter profile
…while your friends happily act as spectators with popcorns, watching how this breakup turns into a social media disaster. Awkward! And I guess you wouldn’t want to be dumped via social sites too.
