Ads Coming On Twitter Soon

twitter-money“Twitter advertising platform is expected to launch within a month or so and is currently under the test phase.” Anamitra Banerji, head of product management and monetization at Twitter, said during the IAB Annual Leadership Meeting on Monday.

It was also reported that Twitter will explicitly state if a tweet is paid by a sponsor, and will also ensure that the ads are relevant and useful for users.

We knew this day would come. In this day and age, it’s impossible to keep ads out of our lives.

I would like to see how companies like Ad.ly and IZEA, which offer sponsored tweets respond to this piece of news.

An official ad platform would also mean more sponsored tweets appearing on our already very cluttered timeline. Would this drive away users? Or would it be welcomed by users who find relevant ads useful?

Personally, I'll unfollow users who tweets ads. Twitter is more about connection rather than hard selling, that's what I think.

Agreed. It's understandable to casually advertise through tweets but an ad platform would uncontrollably invite too many sponsored tweets. I guess 2 way conversations are going back to one way.

To be honest, advertising doesn't bother me. They are a business and they provide a service, so they should be making money for their effort.

I think there is a limit of ads, for some reason I like to see them. Not click them! LoL.. creative ads attracts my attention. Good learning process. Unless that tweep keeps posting

buy me, buy me, buy me, then I'll unfollow =)

    Cheers

Ok, so you don't want Twitter to make money on ads. What if you had the choice of getting a monthly paid Twitter account with no ads or Twitter start charging companies like Tweetdeck for all the api calls they use for you to post and see tweets. Would you pay a monthly fee to Twitter or Tweetdeck etc.?

We want Twitter to grow as a company and add new features, but without $$$, guess what, that's hard to do.

    Happy Tweeting!

    I agree on Brian here.
Google started off 3 years without making a DIME. Look at where they are today? Their main income is from there ads. This allowed them to grow their company at an extraordinary rate and today dominate the search engines.

It's funny many of the people I've talk to that hate ads on a website or the internet as a whole, are some of the same people that don't like it if a company is making money.

It's easy math, a profitable company create jobs, how it that a bad thing? Your right, where would Google be today if they never made a dollar?

It is essential for Twitter to monetize and I think those of us who love this service should support its ad platform. However, it is good to note that Twitter can also monetize by selling real time data and providing strategic statistics tools for businesses. Of course, advertising brings in a bigger bulk of the money.

With little knowledge about how the ad platform works, it might worry some people that the volume of sponsored tweets would become too overwhelming, even for people who don't mind ads. But I guess we should trust Twitter's promise of keeping the ads relevant and useful for users.

How it's going to be received depends highly on the execution. We shall see!
