How To: Search Engine Optimize Your Facebook Fan Page

facebookThe new SEO trend is on its way – let’s call it the Facebook SEO.

After attending Search Marketing Expo (SMX) this week, I have gained first hand insights from several Facebook speakers about optimizing Facebook fan pages for higher ranking on Google.

Without further ado, let’s dive into this.

Setting up a vanity URL

Facebook Vanity URL

Facebook vanity URL is akin to the web site domain name. Therefore, it is very important to secure your fan page URL in the very beginning. In order to get your own vanity URL, your fan page must have at least 25 fans. To set your own vanity URL, simply click here and register for a name.

Installing Static FBML application

After setting a vanity URL for your page, you can create rich and dynamic content by installing an application called Static FBML.

By installing this app to your page, you will be able to customize the fan page by posting images, embedding videos, and adding links on it. Note that these are the same SEO practices used for web pages. By doing so, the chances of your fan page getting picked up by Google are likely to increase.

However, there is some coding involved, which requires a programming language called FBML. If you are familiar with HTML, you can pick up the language pretty easily because there are so many overlaps between the two. If you are a pro and would like to create a fancy fan page, you can check out this book - FBML Essentials: Facebook Markup Language Fundamentals.

Stuffing keywords in the Info Tab

Facebook Keywords SEO

If you are not a programmer, there is always an easy way out. Similar to how you optimize web pages using meta-descriptions and title tags, you can also optimize fan pages by putting relevant keywords on the Info tab. You could also paste links from different social media sites like Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr. Even though it has been said that there is no-follow attribute to any links on Facebook, it wouldn’t hurt to let other people know you are on other social sites too.

Attaching YouTube videos

Facebook YouTube SEO

Because Google has acquired YouTube, its search algorithm has also integrated videos as one of their search factors for ranking. To my understanding, one way to organically alter Google search result page is by using YouTube videos; therefore, if you put a video on a wall or in the custom FBML tab, that will be a plus.

Nevertheless, putting videos on a fan page will not only increase fan engagement but it will also allow people to share content with each other.

Fact is, Google picks up almost anything that it deems worthy- the notes tab, individual notes, individual posts, individual fbml tabs. So its best to pack your Page with good, relevant info. Try to think of your Page as a summary of your website.

Though 'stuffing keywords in your info tab' may be important, its important to keep it short and simple. A short, keyword-full description will do. If you have a 'company story/history', leave it for a custom fbml tab.

As important as SEO is, remember that Fan Pages are about providing info for your readers (especially the first-time ones!), and not the search engines.

    My 2 cents.

@Lorraine, I totally agreed with you. You can think of your fan page as a summary of your website. You can also think of it as a micro-site or a social extension for your website. Be it the hang out place for your fans or a channel for customer outreach.

Facebook fan pages are indeed a great way to promote your company on the social web. They are free and require no hosting and maintenance fee whatsoever. They even provide in-depth analytic and traffic report.

Also, adding a FBML tab is as simple as creating a new page for your blog. Try it, it's fun and easy =)

Spend a little time optimizing your site for bing … your visibility in Facebook search and help to take your fan page to new heights! …

  • jonnychn

    @video search optimization
Yeah. Bing is the only advertiser who is offering paid search on Facebook. Its CPC on Facebook is much lower than on Bing itself. If you type in something on Facebook search box, select Web Results, then you will see bunch of search results sponsored by Bing.

@PrayMadeleineMcCann Unfortunately, I believe the war of domain name on Facebook is already happening. To check your domain, simply go to facebook.com/username and see if the name is still available. If not, try go to facebook.com/yourdesiredname, and send them a msg stating that you are interested to buy their url or transfer the name to you. YES, you could do a name transfer on Facebook.

I'm intrigued about “domain transfer” – didn't think it was part of the TOS?

Search Engine Optimization Just added online booking to a client's Facebook Fan page. Is your biz optimizing its so fan page? …

  • jonnychn

Yeah, Facebook TOS doesn't allow it. BUT they didn't say you can't reserve a name for future use like a parking domain. By the way, I've read 10 Tips for Facebook Advertising. Can you explain why CPM is not a good way to put up ads?

  • jonnychn

Haha. Not really but it will be a good business to do in the future. I am testing out the SEO effect on Facebook Fan Page. By the way, news feed optimization is going to be a BIG topic in 2010.
