Hitwise: Facebook Overtook Google in U.S

facebookFacebook was previously announced as the world’s second most visited site, after overtaking Yahoo. We knew it is just a matter of time that it would overtake Google to take on the number one spot. Is the day finally here?

According to Hitwise’s data, Facebook has overtaken Google as the most visited website in the U.S for the week ending March 13, 2010. Facebook was responsible for 7.07% of the entire U.S web visits while Google was just a little behind with 7.03%.

It seems like Google’s Super Bowl ad didn’t manage to prevent the inevitable.

Meanwhile, the latest Compete statistics revealed that Facebook is still some 14 million visits away in terms of worldwide visits from Google. Evidently, there is still some catching up to do before Facebook is able to clinch the world’s most visited website title.

Facebook keeps growing, and the trend is for them to not only overtake but substantially surpass.

It reasons that “computer algorithms are not good for answering general questions – like what is the best DVD player, or what bar should I visit this weekend or should I leave my boyfriend.”

I think people really want content from their friends (updates, recommendations, where to buy good stuff, etc.).
