TREND: Smartphones Will Dominate By 2011

smartphonesAccording to Nielsen, the number of Smartphone users would surpass the number of feature phone users in the U.S by 2011. In other words, with more data plan sign ups, we can assume that more people will be on the Internet while on the move.

This mobile trend is of course to the delight of mobile advertising companies. Google and Apple are two main players that were quick in capturing this market. With rumors of Apple’s mobile ad platform, iAd, unveiling on 7th April, Apple could be on its way to gain first mover advantage in the mobile ad market. On the other hand, Google’s acquisition of AdMob is still under review.

The mobile trend doesn’t just bring joy to mobile ad companies, it also boosts the adoption rate of social sites like Twitter and Foursquare. A huge part of Twitter users tweet on-the-go and Foursquare users need data network to perform a check-in. Mobile applications would also experience increasing demand as well. In short, new industries would be born and marketers will definitely take advantage of this new opportunity. Are you looking forward to this mobile trend?

Thanks for pointing out this trend. Technology changes and gets adopted at extremely rapid rates these days. That is why it's great to look at marketing-oriented technology leaders such as Apple and Google to see where marketing world is headed. As more and more people get smartphones and other portable browsing devices (i.e. iPads) and as mobile browsing becomes more user-friendly, the lines between mobile and online marketing will begin to fade. It's good to see the quantitative predictions you provided as they show how quickly this is becoming reality.
