The Social Media Landscape in India [INFOGRAPHIC]

This post is part of the series, Social Media Landscape by Country; covering social media usage of users from specific countries, in an infographic.

india_flagWhile students in the US are checking out their new roommates via Facebook, most students in Japan have hardly heard about such a platform.

Social media might be a hot topic globally, but the tools and their usage might vary largely across countries. Hence, this series is conceived to help us understand (briefly) each country’s social media landscape more specifically.

Since I am currently working in India, the series is going to start with this rising country.

According to my younger colleagues, Facebook is huge in the more developed cities of India. However, checking Emails remains to be the primary reason why Indians go on the web. Broadband disturbances and the lag in technology advancement have become stumbling blocks in the adoption of social media, but that did not stop social sites, such as Twitter from gaining ground in India.

Great post! Would love to see a follow up post about how mobile impacts the social media usage because I heard that mobile penetration in India is faster than PC use.-@grantw

Really Great insights. This is true that ORKUT is still dominate but if you see little deep Orkut is more famous in teenager but Facebook is still first choice for who are crossed 27-28. This is one of the biggest difference in use of Social Media. Great to know that you are working at India. In which part of India you are working ?

    Hi Jaydip!

Yea you are right. Really excited to learn more about usage patterns from the people I meet here. I am working in Gurgaon for a non profit company right now (:

    Thanks for the support, Arif!

Thanks, grantw (: What you said is true, I was actually hesitant about whether to add in the mobile landscape. Will definitely look into it if readers find it useful.

Hey! We've been using social media for social change in India for quite some time with some success… Recently we took an interview with Sanjukta Basu (online program coordinator for Bell Bajao—which won Cannes Lions this year ) on the role of Social Media for nonprofits http://ow.ly/2uoa3 in India. Check out!

Yea it seems like Orkut's following is slowing down in contrast to Facebook. Orkut restricts user's activity and it became nothing but a recorded chat room.
I also evaluated and made a visual data graph(infographic) on Indian internet named 'Look Back 2010'. Here is the link: http://eyedealab.com/blog/arti…

    Thanks

Nice article….blogs are becoming quite popular in India…Social Media has also entered into various sectors of corporate houses. From LinkedIn being heavily used by HR teams to find suitable candidates; Facebook and Twitter are becoming important marketing channels for business to communicate with their consumers…check out this article for some other observations in this area -
