…the official theme song for this year’s World Cup, Waka Waka, by Shakira. Since its released on 4 June 2010, the MTV has over 80 million views on YouTube.
It’s an amazing statistic given that no other World Cup video ever comes near to that figure, not even Nike’s viral ad.
Ever since I started watching the World Cup in 1994, there isn’t any recollection of the previous theme songs. But this year seems different, as Waka Waka was created with a true unique African style, closely linked to the tournament’s brand package.
Try searching for the other World Cup theme songs and you’ll realize how difficult it is to find them.
On a fair note, Waka Waka’s success is also partly due to the rise of social media. The previous World Cups weren’t able to leverage fully on technology and word of mouth.
Last but not least, we hope you enjoy the final game between Spain and Netherlands.
