Why Marketers Need To Know About The Boomers

baby-boomersAged between 46 and 54 years old, Baby Boomers usually fall off the radar of marketers.

They were known to be thrifty slower adopters, but not anymore.

I now have grandmothers commenting on my Facebook photos, and grandfathers showing me how to use an iPhone. They are also affluent, and the oldest of group are ready to retire comfortably.

If you think that this older consumer group is not interested in your latest products and services, think again.

According to Nielsen facts, Boomers:

  • Dominate 1023 out of 1083 consumer packaged goods categories
  • Spend 38.5% of CPG dollars, but only 5% of advertising dollars are currently targeted towards the 35 to 64 years old
  • Watch the most video: 9.34 hours a day
  • Comprise 1.3 of all TV viewers, online users, and social media users
  • More likely to have broadband Internet access at home

It’s time show them some love?

For God's sake, you talk like we are ancient. Don't be so incredibly patronising! People in their 40's and 50's were creating the technology you seem to think your comments worthy of space on while you were still at nursery. Not many in UK retiring comfortably at 54.

Hey Suzie. Thanks for your comment. But in what way are we patronizing?

  • Mike Kirkeberg

Very True. Even with recession, boomers control more disposable income than any other group.

I’m a boomer and Managing Director of Construction Marketing UK and despite popular belief, people do NOT become fossils once they turn 50. In fact due to the current economy in Europe people will probably be working until they’re 70!
The fastest growing segment of Social Media audience is 50-65 year old women. It’s true all the old hippies love Social Media!!
The UK can be a little slow sometimes, but we’re currently making leaps and bounds with Social Media http://wp.me/p1fPZU-sF I must admit the construction and property sector are far from being ‘early adaptors’ but we are now making progress. I lived in the Philippines for many years, I know the country (like all of Asia) is full of talent, my wife went to UP Dilliman and I know standards of education are very high, SO why not communicate and publicise your talent more?? Why has it taken me so long to find a great Asia Social Media company like Penn Olsen. You’re doing a great job guys, stay in touch! (See you on LinkedIn Willis?)
