Youku.com has announced that it will begin an new animated web series titled Miss Puff (泡芙小姐) this month. The few clips that I’ve watched so far have been surprisingly sexy and risqué for something produced in China. Youku itself describes it as a Chinese Sex and the City.
The story centers around Miss Puff, a Beijing woman who’s looking for love, though she’s quite often found lounging around her apartment in her underwear, chatting and smoking in front of her computer. The artwork is pretty stylized, with animated two-dimensional figures overlaid on top of a more realistic, possibly rotoscoped background.
The series continues from last November’s Miss Puff’s Goldfish Bowl, with 104 seven-minute episodes to run over eight seasons. It’s interesting to see Youku push original made-for-web content, recently turning to legitimate content after so many years of being a haven for pirated material.
The website currently claims to have a whopping 280 million online viewers.
