#GeekCamp Is Around The Corner, No Marketers Allowed

GeekCamp will be held on October 1st in Singapore, and is “focused purely on technical matters.” No marketers or business developers will be allowed, as the event is designed strictly and purely for technical folks. Expect no “social media marketing sort of tech-like gimmicks” from Geekcamp.

What about the event? Its website explains:

If you are a geek, developer or programmer who works with technology most of the time – ranging from Java, Python, C++, MySQL, Objective C, Android, PHP, MySQL, Ruby, Linux and anything else in the Open Source Movement and otherwise – then GeekCamp is the perfect event for you.

Inspired by BarCamp, GeekCamp is comprised of sharing sessions in which participants pitch in to share knowledge about all things coding related. The event was sparked by @Kamal, founder of the Malaysia-based Ruby consultancy Bitfluent, with a tweet that read:

“I’m going to run GeekCamp. All technical talks, single track. No offense to marketers, *preneurs, social media experts, but you can suck it.”

The focus should make for an interesting event, although the emphatically closed nature certainly contrasts strongly with Barcamp.

And in 2009, Jason Ong brought GeekCamp to Singapore where it has been pretty successful in the last couple of years. Sneha Menon, a volunteer at the geeky event, told me that last year’s GeekCamp attracted about 200 folks with its 20 sessions, including a post-event party. (A geek party… Yeah!)

Speaking from a founder’s point of view, I’m happy to know that so many skilled people have a chance to gather in a single location. We do need programmer-oriented events in the region.

And for the geeks – and I mean hard core geeks in Singapore – head over here to sign-up for GeekCamp. It’s a great chance to get out and do some networking with others in your field. You don’t see many events like this, so cherish the opportunity.
