The State of the Internet in Asia [MAP]

akamai

Avg connection speed (Mbps)

No sooner than we had mentioned Akamai in a piece earlier today, did we discover that its State of the Internet report for Q2 had been published. We encourage you to drop over and check it out for yourself — but for those who like your information in bullet points rather than 50 page PDFs, we’ve summarized the main points pertaining to Asia.

  • South Korea remains the speed demon of Asia, with highest average connection speed at 13.8 Mbps.
  • But Hong Kong would beat out Korea in a sprint, as the region put up the highest average peak connection speed at 44.4 Mbps.
  • In the Asia region, China and India are the tortoises in the race. China has finally passed 1.0 Mbps, while India still clocks in at a paltry 0.8 Mbps.
  • In the top 100 cities (of 900 Akamai looked at) there were 59 from Japan, 10 from South Korea, one in Australia, and Hong Kong. (Yay Japan!)
  • To put the Asia numbers in perspective, the global average was 2.6 Mbps, and the average peak speed was 11.4 Mbps

We’ve taken most of the important Asia numbers and made them available here if you’d like to see them. We’ve also charted the figures on a map below for your viewing pleasure.
