After Tudou.com (NASDAQ:TUDO) went public with allegations of TV show piracy on rival Youku.com (NYSE:YOKU) late last night, Youku has now responded - and says that Tudou itself has pirated over 60 of its own licensed TV dramas and serials. It has also become clear that China’s two biggest video-streaming sites had been talking about this behind closed doors for a week. But it’s now all out in the open, apparently making it more likely that a two-way legal battle will ensue, rather than any further negotiations. Talking to PO over the ...

China’s Eedoo iSec Console Postponed Again, Will Break $15M in R&D Costs
We've written a lot of skeptical things about the eedoo iSec gaming console, and once again, we come with grim tidings. The console's release, originally slated for this month, has been pushed back yet again, with eedoo's CEO telling Sina Tech there's now no scheduled release date. This second delay isn't a huge surprise given that halfway through the month we hadn't seen any signs of the console or even any attempts at marketing or launch hype. What is a surprise is that R&D costs for the iSec console will break ...

. China’s two largest video-streaming sites, Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO) and Youku (NYSE:YOKU), are heading for a legal battle after Tudou announced that it is taking action - together with its license partner Cti TV - over alleged piracy of a popular TV series on Youku. The Tudou claim relates to a chat show hosted by model and actress Dee Hsu - aka ‘Little S’ in Chinese - called Kang Xi is Coming (pictured above), and to which it has exclusive licensed streaming rights. Tudou has bought a number of other Taiwanese shows, which ...
Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak Questions Singapore’s Creativity
A stab in the heart for Singapore nationalists. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak isn’t a fan of Singapore when it comes to creative thinking. Speaking to BBC, Wozniak questions where are the creative souls in Singapore. Here’s an excerpt from his interview: When you’re very structured almost like a religion… Uniforms, uniforms, uniforms… everybody is the same. Look at structured societies like Singapore where bad behavior isn’t tolerated. You are extremely punished. Where are the creative people? Where are the great artists? Where are the great musicians? Where are the great singers? Where ...
Clozette Launches Fashion Social Network with Glam Media Japan

byRick MartininAsia, Business, Social Media, Web
Earlier this year we told you about Singapore-based Clozette, a fashion-focused social network that was growing pretty fast at that point. Since then it was chosen by Glam Media - perhaps the top media company in the world targeting women and style - as a technology partner and publisher to help it push into South East Asia. And today Clozette is announcing that it is partnering with Glam Media Japan to launch a Japanese version of its portal at clozette.glam.jp. Since we looked at Clozette back in September, the service is ...
Rumor: China Unicom Orders 2 Million Xiaomi M1 Handsets
Finally, some news about a phone that isn't the iPhone 4S! For the past few days, rumors have been swirling about a cooperation between China Unicom (NYSE:CHU; HKG:0762) and Xiaomi, and the latest reports have it that Unicom has ordered two million of Xiaomi's M1 phones. That's quite a coup -- and a change -- for Xiaomi, which had previously suggested that its phones would be available exclusively via the company's official online store. We assume Unicom isn't buying two million of the things for personal use, though, so expect to ...

byRick MartininBusiness, Gaming, Mobile
Hot on the heels of DeNA’s tie-up with Alibaba Cloud Computing earlier today that will further its expansion in China, rival gaming giant GREE just announced that they are partnering with Paypal, a big move that’s sure to help facilitate payments as it grows globally. According to their statement, GREE and Paypal’s partnership will “facilitate GREE’s global expansion … to over 103 million active Paypal accounts” worldwide. Likewise for the 150 million GREE gamers, Paypal will become a payment option which they can use to buy GREE coins or make in-game ...
DeNA to Bring Mobage to Aliyun OS in China

byRick MartininBusiness, Gadgets, Gaming, Mobile
Japan’s mobile social gaming giant DeNA (TYO:2432) is announcing today that its Chinese subsidiary DeNA China is partnering with Alibaba Cloud Computing (AliCloud), a subsidiary of Alibaba Group (HKG:1688), to bring Mobage to Aliyun OS smartphones. The tie-up represents a partnership between two Asian internet giants, though I find it somewhat surprising considering how new Aliyun is. We took a closer look at Aliyun a few months back, which was officially unveiled back in July. According to DeNA, Mobage will be pre-loaded on the K-Touch W800 smartphone, which is set to ...
Is Blizzard Considering Switching to Tencent for WoW in China

Blizzard's World of Warcraft may be seeing a downswing in its user base, but it's still got more players -- and rakes in more money -- than you probably care to imagine. And, nearly alone among Western-developed games, it's super popular in China, where profits are actually rising even as they fall in other regions. So, being Blizzard's WoW operating partner in China has always been a coveted position, and it's a partnership Blizzard has already shown it is willing to reevaluate. In 2009, for example, they ditched local partners The9 ...
Has Google Dropped to Third Place in China? [STATS]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business, Web
New data from web analytics company CNZZ suggests that Google (NASQAQ:GOOG) is now in third place in China in terms of search engine traffic - pushed down by the rise of Sohu’s (NASDAQ:SOHU) Sogou.com. But a note of caution: analytical methods can vary greatly, and CNZZ’s numbers have always been greater for the smaller search engine rivals than the stats from, say, Enfodesk, that we’ve used in the past. Here’s the most recent data for November, in terms of traffic: Nonetheless, if anyone was going to steal Google’s tenuous second position in ...

The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. Motivated. Dynamic. Innovative. Three much-used - indeed, overused - adjectives on many people’s CVs. There are other resumé regulars, too - such as “interpersonal skills,” “track record” - that have become cliché and tiresome, used unthinkingly, and which are blasts from the past that really ought to be avoided like the plague and used few and far between. D’oh! LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD), the business-oriented social network, has picked through the buzzwords on the profiles of its ...
