Tencent’s Pony Ma Challenges Real-Name Advocates By Talking About Prostitutes

byC. CusterinBusiness, Social Media
Real-name registration systems are all the rage in China these days. And by "all the rage," what I mean is "increasingly mandated via government intervention." Just within the past few months, we've seen microblogging services, online payment systems, and even public transportation implement regulations that will require users to have their state ID numbers on file. So it's no surprise government regulators are now looking at Tencent's (HKG:0700) QQ chat software, which is by far China's most popular IM service. Indeed, at a recent meeting of industry leaders and government regulators, ...

Alibaba’s B2C e-commerce site, Tmall.com, which stands for Taobao Mall, is changing its Chinese name in a bid to give itself more distinctive branding. Starting next month, it’ll be called ‘Tian Mao’ in Chinese, which roughly means Sky Cat, and will have a new logo and mascot to match. But the URL - and its English moniker - will remain the same. Tmall was launched on its own domain in November 2010, and last summer was spun off as a separate company. It grew from the wildly popular Taobao C2C shopping ...

byC. CusterinBusiness, Social Media, Web
Earlier today, the folks at China Internet Watch spotted an interesting thing in some of Baidu's (NASDAQ:BIDU) search results -- they had a thumbs-up logo and a number next to them. It actually looks very similar to Facebook's "Like" feature, although it is also being compared with Google's implementation of the Google Plus +1 button in its search results for obvious reasons. It turns out that Baidu is beta testing integration of its Baidu Share social bookmarking service with its search results. The number listed next to the thumbs-up indicates the ...
Microsoft Sues Chinese Retailers for Selling PCs with Pirated Software

byRick MartininAsia, Business
The Financial Times is reporting today that Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is bringing a lawsuit against electronics and appliance retailers Gome (HKG:0493) and Buynow, claiming that computers sold in their stores have pirated copies of Windows and Office pre-installed. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer claimed last year that even though PC sales are about the same in the US and China, the company makes about only five percent of its US revenue in China as a result of piracy. We’re not sure exactly how much Microsoft is seeking in damages from these two retailers, ...
