Elisha Tan is the Founder of Learnemy, a web application that finds you instructors for anything you want to learn. Always wanted to build a web application but didn’t know where to start learning? I had the same problem too. I didn’t know what resource was good for newbies because I had no way to tell if I could understand the material or if the material gave me enough information to build an app. So I’ve put together 10 good sites where you can pick up Python as a newbie without ...
If He Was Still Here, Kim Jong Il Would Look at Glorious Pyongyang Subreddit

byRick MartininCreative, Web
ever: reddit.com/r/Pyongyang. I can’t tell if this is real or fake, and since it seems to have sprung up just recently, it’s hard to tell if this is a troll (or trolls) with too much time to spare, or real-live North Koreans on Reddit. I can’t imagine it’s the latter… The page is decorated in a patriotic red with portraits of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung prominently featured. All posts to the subreddit thus far have been from the latter, reddit user Kim Il Sung, who has been ...
Every 60 Seconds On the Chinese Internet… [INFOGRAPHIC]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Creative, Web
The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. There has been a bit of a fad on the internet in recent days for posts about amazing things that happen online in just one minute, and so the Chinese site 17Startup made one about the web scene in China. The numbers were so awesome that we felt it was worth whacking the infographic into an image editor in order to translate it into English. It shows that insane amounts of money - and a ...

byRick MartininCreative, Mobile, Video
We’ve looked at number of different augmented reality apps over the past year, ranging from fun to practical to downright scary. And it seems fitting to end the year with this one from Asahi Broadcasting (iTunes link) which promises good fortune as you break in the new year. Or at least, a virtual fortune anyway… The application is named Kamiwaza, and it uses your iPhone camera to detect 1000, 5000, and 10000 yen notes. Once they are found the app displays a much bigger pile of money on your screen. It ...

Hatsune Miku Dominates Digital, Stars in New 3DS Game, Google Chrome Ad

byRick MartininCreative, Gaming
About a month back we told you about how CyberAgent America was collaborating with Crypton Future Media to bring the famous virtual star Hatsune Miku into Pico World. And the iconic Vocaloid character hasn’t slowed down since. During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, a trailer for a new game Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai was unveiled by Nintendo (TYO:7974) and Sega. Check it out below. While I can’t claim to be a devoted fan of Hatsune Miku, I’m pretty amazed by how the character has managed to permeate so many ...
Singapore’s TheKube2: Smallest Touch Mp3 Player the World?

byRick MartininAsia, Creative, Gadgets, Mobile
Singapore’s Bluetree Electronics recently launched its update of TheKube mp3 player, appropriately named TheKube2. The player is, not surprisingly, cube-shaped, and its diminutive size draws immediate comparisons to Apple’s iPod Shuffle . I’m not quite sure of the dimensions of TheKube2, but from the demo video below (courtesy of TechieLobang) you can get an idea for how small it really is. You control the device with touch gestures, though I’m a little skeptical about how well they work. For a device like this which you’re likely to have in your ...
Video Games on Train Handles? Yes Please!

byRick MartininCreative, Gaming
Here’s a great design concept from Chinese designer Jiang Qian, who has a vision to gamify the straps that passengers grip while standing on trains. His idea for a Game Strap is a pretty creative one, and we hope that one day it becomes a reality. The design would include a display is powered by the grip of your hand, and when you let go the game is over. It would also alert you via the display and a vibration when you’re arriving at a station, so that you don’t get ...
China’s Top 50 Brands List Features 14 Tech Giants
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business, Creative, Web
The market research firm Millward Brown has just released the 2012 edition of its ‘BrandZ most valuable Chinese brands top 50’ report. It sees more Chinese tech firms that ever on the list, including well-known names in social media. Indeed, some tech brands are growing most quickly in terms of what’s called “brand value” - that’s a measure used by some analysts derived from a company’s ability to generate demand, based partially on forecasted earnings. The report’s authors note that “this explosion of value suggests the enormous influence that Chinese ...
OldSchooled Wants Words of Wisdom From Old Folks

byRick MartininCreative, Web
OldSchooled.org is a fun project hitting the interwebs from Singapore that is asking users to submit worlds of wisdom from the older generation, so that it can be collected and displayed online for everyone’s benefit. In the process, for every submission, OldSchooled is planning to donate S$1 until their deadline of December 15th. The project was created by interns at ad firm Bartle Bogle Hegarty Singapore, and it’s an admirable project because, after all, our grandparents aren't going to be with us forever. So efforts to preserve things that they’ve ...

Japanese advertising giant Dentsu (TYO: 4324) has partnered with Japan Post Service Co. Ltd. to develop a Facebook page/app which enables users to send each other physical greeting cards without knowing the recipient’s actual address. It’s called Postman, and you can access the service by going to facebook.com/postman.jp. As you might expect, the services is not free, and card prices are (as far as we can see) all under 630 yen. The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. To commemorate its 10 billion apps milestone, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has released a great infographic which shows more details about Android’s astounding achievements. Now with over one billion app downloads every 30 days, Android’s growth shows no signs of slowing. And according to Google, Asia sits at the core of that growth. Their graphic shows that four of the top five “app-crazed countries” are in Asia: South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. The ...
