Well, we all knew it was coming. Heck, I even wrote it was coming in an article three months ago. Now, it's official: China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) plans to establish a platform for regulating internet television. According to SARFT vice-chief Zhang Haitao, the administration will regulate IPTV streaming services, mobile video services, and traditional internet television services like Youku (NYSE:YOKU) and Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO). The move is part of a larger push by SARFT to regulate the "three networks:" telecom networks, computer networks, and cable television networks. ...

JKT48, the sister Indonesian idol band of Japanese girl group AKB48, is promoting Rakuten Belanja Online, the joint venture between the Japanese e-commerce platform Rakuten and media giant MNC Group. Since Chinese New Year, the JKT48 girls can be seen in a TV ad campaign for the Indonesian online mall. In the 30 second commercial, the girls of JKT48 are larking around (see the video below) in the dressing room, apparently shopping on Rakuten on a laptop, and more. The point is to promote the range of women’s clothing and accessories ...
Starbucks and Jiepang Hook-Up Single Users for Valentine’s Promo

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Social Media, Video, Web
Smartphone-toting singletons in China will get some help in finding a potential date for Valentine’s Day with a new social marketing campaign from Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) and the local social network Jiepang. Using both the Jiepang app and some in-store postcards - a good combo of hi- and low-tech - single folks in China could make a new connection as well as perhaps win some prizes. Jiepang is a social check-in service that has previously teamed-up with the likes of Starbucks and also Nokia (HEL:NOK1V; NYSE:NOK) on fun campaigns, and both those ...
A Review of the Xiaomi M1 [VIDEO]
byC. CusterinGaming, Mobile, Video
We've done a fair amount of reporting on Xiaomi's M1 smartphone, and apparently I got caught up in the hype, because a little over a month ago, my wife and I both bought one. I wanted to actually use it for a while so I could offer a review based on a longer period of use, and put it through the rigors of life as a cell phone in China. Here's my fill review in video, but if you dislike watching things (or are on a Youtube-challenged connection), scroll down ...
Apple’s Siri Can’t Understand Chinese [VIDEO]

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) voice recognition feature Siri, which appears on the iPhone 4S, can’t understand or speak Chinese. Perhaps it’s learning. But for now, despite most users probably knowing of this limitation before purchasing, it’s a frustrating omission. That’s probably why two young Chinese nerds made the amusing video, below, about the language barrier that stands between them and their digital assistant. Even without subtitles, you can sense the comedically exaggerated frustration at not being understood by your pricey smartphone. My favourite part is when the guy in the car resorts to a ...
The Chinese Internet Takes an Arrow in the Knee

"Then I took an arrow in the knee," might just have been the Western internet's last big meme of 2011, emerging just after the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and quickly catching on until it was suddenly absolutely everywhere. For those not in the know, the joke comes from the aforementioned Skyrim, an expansive single-player RPG in which it seems every guard you meet in every city tells you the same sad story: "I used to be an adventurer like you. Then I took an arrow in the ...

Rovio Mobile, makers of the Angry Birds game series, has left a very big hint that its Angry Birds Seasons game will get a Chinese New Year update very soon. The hint, spotted by Pocketgamer UK, comes in a new year’s greeting uploaded to YouTube (and embedded below) which sees a dragon fly past at the exact same time that it mentions there’ll be an update to the smash-hit game this January. If that not-too-subtle hint isn’t enough, the lanterns, red walls, and karst peaks ought to be sufficient to indicate ...
Japanese iPhone App Kamiwaza Multiplies Your Money

byRick MartininCreative, Mobile, Video
We’ve looked at number of different augmented reality apps over the past year, ranging from fun to practical to downright scary. And it seems fitting to end the year with this one from Asahi Broadcasting (iTunes link) which promises good fortune as you break in the new year. Or at least, a virtual fortune anyway… The application is named Kamiwaza, and it uses your iPhone camera to detect 1000, 5000, and 10000 yen notes. Once they are found the app displays a much bigger pile of money on your screen. It ...
Top 10 YouTube Videos in Singapore in 2011, Yam Ah Mee Included

byWillis WeeinVideo
It has been a festive week but things are still pretty busy, as we have round-ups and retrospectives for 2011, as well as preparation for our Startup Asia conference in February 2012. Here’s another 2011 rewind list, but this time it comes courtesy of the folks at Google Singapore. The ten videos below are, as you might expect, filled with humor, parody, and remixes. “Nice Guys” by YouTube celeb, Nigahiga, clinches the top spot in Singapore. Local remix, the “Yam Ah Mee meme” was ranked third. How’s that for creativity, Woz? Catch all ...
Asia Tech Tour Episode 2: Youku.com from China [VIDEO]
byRick MartininAsia, Video, Web
This is episode 2 of our Asia Tech Tour video series. If there’s any Asian service or app that you’d like to see us explore, please send us your request. Today Charlie and I do a quick overview of Youku.com (NYSE:YOKU), which is the leading streaming video website in China, with about a 30 percent market share. We’ve written about them pretty extensively in the past, and you can read those articles here. The company gets pegged as the YouTube of China quite often, and while there are certainly similarities, there ...
If You Feel Like an LG Optimus, Go and Brush Your Shoulders Off

byRick MartininMobile, Social Media, Video
So I received an email announcement this morning about LG’s (SEO:003550) social Christmas promotion, which gives users a chance to win free phones like its Optimus 3D or Optimus Black. I didn’t think much of the contest until I noticed their gangsta ‘Lay-Z’ Santa promo video. It looks as though someone in LG marketing broke out the eggnog a little early this year. The YouTube video they’ve put together is thoroughly cheeze-filled. The accompanying Facebook page invites fans to ‘like’ LG Mobile, and take a quiz for a chance to ...
Samsung’s Flexible Display [VIDEO]

byWillis WeeinGadgets, Video
I briefly read about Samsung’s flexible display over on PC World. The idea was fascinating but hard to grasp. Screens that are flexible? That would be pretty hard to manufacture. Here’s an excerpt from PC World that briefly described what it would be like: Samsung has shown flexible OLED (organic light emitting diode) displays inside rigid cases that kept the screens curved. The technology has material within each pixel that generates light, making it perhaps more suitable for flexible screens than LCDs, which would require both a flexible screen and a backlight. Wow. Though ...
