We all know how famous Instagram is with millions of users snapping and sharing grungy pictures with it on their iPhones - even in Indonesia. Yet, with most of us smartphone fans here having a Blackberry by our side, we wish it would be ported to RIM’s (NASDAQ:RIMM) OS. Our wish has sort of come true - perhaps for the second time, as Pikubo tried back in August - with BibbyCam (pictured above), which was made by Grace Tahir and Ronald Komalaputra. Although not officially launched yet, the app has gained ...

Thailand was supposed to be the place where RIM would hold the event, but as most of you now know, that nation is facing a terrible flood disaster in the capital of Bangkok. Below is an excerpt from the notice sent out by RIM: Due to the current high levels of flooding in Bangkok, Research In Motion (RIM) has decided BlackBerry DevCon Asia will not take place in Bangkok this year. The decision was ...
Yahoo Koprol, in Major App Update, Now Integrates With BBM6

byJoshua KevininAsia, Mobile, Social Media, Web
Yahoo Koprol, the first location-based social network in Indonesia, has announced that a major update to the Koprol app for BlackBerry has integrated it into Blackberry Messenger 6 (BBM6), the newest version of the hit group-messaging service. With this integration there are interesting features that will be made available. There’s a real-time chatting feature with Koprol users through the BBM6 API, which is really exciting because with Koprol on your Blackberry, you just have to follow that user on Koprol and you don’t need to ask for their Blackberry PIN. It’s ...

byJoshua KevininBusiness, Mobile
The first Blackberry Lifestyle store has finally opened for Blackberry-loving Indonesia over at Mal Kelapa Gading 3 in Jakarta. With a 50 percent discount of any Blackberry products for the first 250 individuals, more than a hundred people queued to enter the opening of the store. The Blackberry Lifestyle Store isn’t quite like a normal store that sells Blackberry handsets, they do sell Blackberrys, but RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) has put a lively touch on its retail space taking a page from what Apple did with theirs. This shouldn’t be confused with ...

India’s Check-in Service Mojostreet Finds One Mobile Platform Outperforms Others

byRick MartininMobile, Social Media
Earlier this year we told you about Indian location-based service Mojostreet, a promising start-up that received $350,000 in funding in April. As we mentioned before, the service is very much a check-in service like Foursquare or Gowalla, but with an interesting twist that allows you to use Mojobucks to buy a location (ala Monopoly). Read more about how it works in our previous piece. We just received some stats from the service’s founder Kaylan providing some insights into how mobile users are using Mojostreet. It might surprise you which mobile platform ...
RIM to Hold BBM Apps Hackathon in Indonesia

After launching its latest smartphone in Indonesia, RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) is bringing the BBM Apps Hackathon to the nation as well. The handset maker is inviting top talents in Indonesia from developer communities to exchange ideas, and build great apps on top of the RIM’s new social platform in a two-day intensive program. RIM previously invited developers to submit their apps, whether still an idea stage or if you already have a working prototype. Developers were also asked to write an essay about how the social platform can add more value to ...
MapmyIndia Will Lead You to Businesses, Places, With New ShowNearby App

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Web
Today, MapmyIndia has launched a useful location-based service (LBS) app called ShowNearby that leads users to nearby places and venues, such as restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and stores. ShowNearby is a free app for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry. It’s actually a collaboration between ShowNearby, a Singaporean start-up that specializes in LBS (and that already has separate apps on those three platform), and the Indian digital mapping experts. This tie-up brings a sort of home-grown Google Places-like service to India for the first time. But ShowNearby’s cleverer than just that (from a monetizing ...
Blackberry Blackout Gets Animated, RIM Claims Services Improving

RIM’s BlackBerry woes continue today as it scrambles to recover from a service disruption that has gone on since Monday. The company says that “all services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as India, have been operating with significant improvement." The Wall Street Journal says that in Japan, where BlackBerry is carried by Docomo, domestic services are uninterrupted although users may have issues communicating with those in affected areas. The report cites a Docomo spokesperson as saying “RIM has told us that Japan isn’t among the regions where ...
Blackberry Services Back in India After Global Glitch
Services have reportedly been restored for Blackbery smartphone users in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa after users reported problems yesterday with email, instant messaging, and internet access. Users in India were affected by the outage as well, reportedly as many as three to four million. RIM has not stated what has caused the problem, nor is there any press release that we can find regarding the issue in its main website’s newsroom. The company did however discuss the problem via one of its Twitter account, @BlackBerryHelp (see below). .bbpBox{background:url(http://a2.twimg.com/profile_background_images/304593792/twitter-background-8_4_2011.jpg) ...
RIM Promises to Invest in R&D in Indonesia, But No Data Centers

byMuhammad Ilman AkbarinAsia, Business, Mobile
Canadian BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has promised to make an investment in Indonesia, in the wake of its recent troubles in the country. But there are caveats: the investment is not about creating data centers, as the government has previously demanded. RIM’s investment is related only to R&D, and only in terms of software development. This promise from RIM came after Indonesia’s minister for economic affairs, Hatta Rajasa, met with a Canada delegation and a RIM executive in Jakarta recently. As quoted by MetroTV, Rajasa explained: The investment ...
