How To Reward Your Facebook Fans Offline
While there are many brands on Facebook, few of them are actually rewarding and connecting with their fans offline. How many of them are genuinely showing appreciation for fans that help spread their name farther? Not many. This is because there is a natural disconnect between reality and the virtual world of Facebook. Taggo, a Singapore-based start-up is trying to build a bridge between the two that allows brands to reward fans when they physically visit their stores. We met up with Aneace Haddad and Aaron Koh, the CEO and Business Development ...
Indonesian Government Provide a Boost to Local Start-Ups

byRatri AdityaraniinStartups, Web
The digital start-up scene in Indonesia has finally attracted the government's attention. Through the Department of Commerce, it plans to set regulations that will make it easier for local startups to get funding. The statement comes from trade minister Mari Elka Pangestu, one of the keynote speakers at Indonesia's Creative Products Week (PPKI) 2011. She noticed that many local digital start-ups were acquired by foreign parties, showing that investors abroad have begun to notice what's going on in Indonesia. Not many local businessmen are willing to invest in local start-ups since ...
Why Lean Start-ups Don’t Work?

This guest story is by Guyi Shen, co-founder of lobangclub, he blogs about his experiences at insidestartup.sg. A quick look at the 52 exhibitors on Echelon 2011's site and you will realize the majority of the start-ups are primarily relying on network effects as a major part of their product growth. The current meme in the start-up community (in Singapore, at least) is the "Lean" start-up concept. Unfortunately, the current "Lean" approach doesn't work for network effects startups. Lean is a method of testing the assumptions and hypothesis of a business idea in an iterative manner whilst validating ...

BigAdda Shop, which was launched as a pilot project earlier in April, has been doing exceptionally well. Today the company passed RS 20 million worth of gross transactions per month. Qiyi Underlines its Hulu Ambitions With a Desktop PC App

bySteven MillwardinBusiness, Web
The video-on-demand website Qiyi.com - which is owned by search giant Baidu - now has a brand-new desktop app for Windows PCs. It underlines how the site has ambitions similar to the US service, Hulu, in being the go-to source for full episodes of licensed TV and movie content. The Qiyi app has a layout familiar from the main website, where users can also stream videos in their browser, except that it's darker and has more visual elements. The main categories of video content in the app are: movies, TV series, ...

Finally it’s official. Both Baidu and Microsoft China have confirmed it: Baidu’s partnership with Microsoft’s Bing for English-language searches on Baidu.com is a done deal - after several months of rumors. With this partnership Baidu Search will show English search results based on Bing’s algorithms. It gives Baidu better quality search results, whilst also raising the profile of Bing in China. Although confirmed this afternoon, the Baidu-Bing tie-up is not yet in action. Speaking to Penn-Olson, Baidu’s Director of International Communications, Kaiser Kuo, said that the service will go live “in a ...

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business
Baidu Search dominates its Chinese homeland, but it's struggling elsewhere - its biggest overseas venture in Japan, Baidu.jp, has filed losses of RMB 700 million (US$108.3 million) since 2008. Baidu Japan actually opened in 2007, but required a relaunch in '08 after a shaky start. Those accumulated losses seem to have been sunk into general running and admin costs. The Japanese search engine market is dominated by Yahoo, although Yahoo search is now powered by Google in Japan. This graphic, from SearchEngineWatch.com, reveals that Yahoo Japan holds 56.2% of the marketshare ...
