Update on June 7: The Upper Story (TUS) contacted us and explained that the activation campaign for Microsoft Windows 7 hasn't been launched. The videos are simply uploaded on YouTube and all views are generated organically. TUS will keep us updated in three to six months time after the activation has started. This is interesting. Looks like Microsoft got a little creative when promoting Windows 7 in Southeast Asia, releasing a series of online video ads across a number of social platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Blogger, and Twitter). The Upper Storey (TUS), the ...

How Turkcell Reached 3.6 Million People Through Twitter

byWillis WeeinBusiness, Creative, Video
It has been a long time since I last witnessed a creative Twitter campaign created by an Asian brand (or at least half Asian in this case). Turkcell, the leading mobile phone operator in Turkey, recently posted an inspiring video explaining how it used Twitter to promote its newly launched smartphones. Here’s how it worked: Challenge: Turkcell was launching new smartphones bundled with mobile internet and wanted to create awareness among the heavy internet users. Solution: The company held a seven-day competition that combined the use of Twitter and live video streaming. A gift ...
Yam Ah Mee Invites Fans to Movie on YouTube

byWillis WeeinCreative, Video
The Yam Ah Mee meme continues... But this time around, Yam, as Chief Executive Director at People's Association, smartly employed YouTube as a channel to invite Singaporean (and perhaps Australian) fans for a movie. In this short 35 seconds video (below), Yam Ah Mee walks in like how he was tasked to announce the results for the Singapore General Election. Again, he did it with his famous monotonous and repetitive style. The repetitive speech, however, was made artificially. Nonetheless, Yam Ah Mee's creative effort to promote the movie night is worth noting. YouTubers ...
The Recent Facebook Lawsuit in an Animation

byWillis WeeinCreative, Video
The legal tussle between Paul Ceglia and Mark Zuckerberg has turned into an animation, all thanks to Taiwan-based Next Media Animation TV. In a creative fashion, the animators used cannon-powered ships as an analogy to illustrate the lawsuit battle between Ceglia and Zuckerberg. The animation also subtly shows the Winklevoss twins rowing a canoe away from the Facebook ship after they lost their appeal on their multi-million dollar settlement last week. The video is available in Chinese and English. Like it? Also catch: US-Sino Currency Rap Battle on YouTube , by NMA
Taobao Has a Creative TV Ad [VIDEO]
byWillis WeeinAsia, Creative, Video
We don’t usually see commercials for e-commerce websites. But this TV spot by Taobao is certainly worth a share. Our friends from China might have seen it but to most of us, this ad is something new and refreshing. Catch the ad copy at the end. It is in Chinese voice-over but with English subtitles. “We screened this ad at a press conference in November when we announced the independent domain tmall.com. Since then we blasted it nationwide in China through TV, billboard and print ads,” a Taobao spokeswoman explained when asked ...
Carlsberg’s Streaker Interactive Game Kicks off Hong Kong Rugby Sevens

byWillis WeeinAsia, Creative
Let your hair down because it’s time to be a “rugby streaker”. To kick off the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, official beer sponsor Carlsberg and Euro RSCG Hong Kong have created an interactive online game to get word-of-mouth going. Players upload a profile picture and transform into a naked “streaker” avatar. Your job is simple. All you have to do is to navigate the streaker down the rugby field, and past a host of obstacles including bottles, policewomen and eh... undergarments. Be quick as the top few fastest streakers stand to ...
CyberMedia Integrates QR Codes with Print Magazine

byWillis WeeinAsia, Business, Creative, Web
CyberMedia, a giant publisher in India announced on Friday that its flagship magazine, PCQuest, will deeply integrate QR codes into its March print issue. The idea of bringing QR codes into the magazine is simple. QR codes provide rich multimedia experience to print content. It is the first time readers are able to interact with rich media on print content and advertisements. The only barrier, however, is that users are required to have QR code readers on their phone or laptop (with Internet access) to read the code. From the advertiser ...
Who won the Brandbowl?

Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers for being the 2011 Superbowl champions! But there was more than one winner (and loser) that night. Aside from the football action on the pitch, we were also eagerly anticipating the ads during the breaks. With a 30 second spot costing USD$3 million, we were excited to see what the advertisers had up their sleeves. The fact that an ad is a Superbowl ad creates enormous interest for the brand in question. Of course, with the reach of social media, the value of that $3 million ...

byWillis WeeinAsia, Creative
‘Ding Dong’, the clock strikes twelve. Today is officially Chinese New Year eve, a day for family reunion dinner and celebrations. Both search giants Google and Baidu celebrate the year of rabbit with specially designed doodles. In Singapore, CNY is currently one of the trending topics on Twitter. Without a doubt, China's micro-blog, Sina Weibo is now buzzing loud with Chinese New Year messages. The hottest topic now is “sending your new year wish through a weibo (tweet) with #微博拜年 (loosely translated as tweet your new year greetings)". Also check out how you ...

Twitter Documentary = Twittamentary

byWillis WeeinAsia, Creative
We have a Facebook movie and it is only fair to have a Twitter movie for Twitter lovers. The Twittamentary is a documentary cum movie, directed by Singapore’s very own filmmaker, Tan Siok Siok (@sioksiok). It is created based on people’s opinions and experience with Twitter across America. The same question was asked throughout Siok Siok’s journey: What is the most interesting thing that happened to you because of Twitter? Love it or hate it, there is no correct answer to that question. She interviewed a wide range of Twitterers, from a ...
Yahoo! Innovates Digital Advertising

In the city of San Fransisco, Yahoo! has come up with an innovative way to advertise. Realising that commuters waiting at bus stops are usually bored waiting for buses that never seem to arrive, they installed 20 interactive screens at Yahoo! themed bus stops around the neighbourhoods in San Fran. Hit the jump for the next advance in advertising. Isn't that the coolest idea ever? If only we had something like that at our own bus stop. Dubbed the Bus Stop Derby, it pits the 20 neighbourhoods against each other in 4 different games, ...
