Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has written an open letter to Robin Li, CEO of Chinese search giant Baidu.com, urging the company to take “immediate and tangible steps to protect human rights.” In the letter Durbin tells of his recent trip to China, and how when he searched certain keywords on Baidu he was disappointed to find they were censored. Renren’s Impressive IPO Isn’t That Impressive

byWillis WeeinAsia, Business
Chinese social network Renren started off the first day of its initial public offering (IPO) in spectacular fashion. Its share price went up as high as $21.78 and eventually ended at $18.01, about 22 percent higher than its initial trading price at $14. While the IPO is a success, it remains to be seen if Renren could match up to Facebook’s revenue per user ratio. The Financial Times reported that Facebook earns about $4 per user while Renren makes only $0.80. That’s a huge difference in monetization efficiency, but as many ...

byWillis WeeinAsia
We last reported that young politician Nicole Seah overtook Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew to become Singapore's most popular politician on Facebook. However, within 24 hours that has already become history, at least for now. Influential Singaporean blogger, Wendy Cheng, better known as Xiaxue got annoyed that Singaporeans are giving Seah more support than MM Lee on Facebook. In response, Xiaxue wrote a blog post to help boost the 'like counts' on MM Lee's Facebook page. In her blog post, she took time to explain why MM Lee deserves more respect ...

Despite entering the election just 2 weeks ago, Seah currently has about 57,000 likes on her Facebook page at the point of writing. Her confidence in front of pressing media and reliable new media team are ...

Singapore General Election: The Next Popular Politician on Facebook

Just one day after creating his Facebook page, Singapore’s Workers’ Party’s (WP) star catch, Chen Show Mao, received more than 5,800 'likes'. If the pace of 'likes' increases with momentum like how Nicole Seah did within a week, Chen’s Facebook page may just hit the high of 10,000 – 20,000 'likes' and he could possibly be Singapore's next most popular politician on Facebook. For the benefit of the non-Singaporean readers, Chen is a Beijing-based Singaporean who is a recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship. He came to Singapore from Taiwan at the age ...
Misspelling Gone Viral: Indonesia Loves Fecebook
byRatri AdityaraniinAsia, Web
Before you even ask, no, 'Fecebook' is not a new social network for people to talk about their toilet experiences. Let me explain... Facebook, as it is in most countries, is very popular in Indonesia. Among the most commonly searched keywords on Google, ‘Facebook’ is one of the most popular in this country. But strangely, it’s not only the term ‘Facebook’ that Indonesians are putting in the search box, but they’re typing in ‘Fecebook’ as well. Googling for “Fecebook’ is not a mere coincidence, nor is it a typing error. It’s ...
