PlayCez Android App Hits the Streets, Helps You Find Places to Go

PlayCez Android App Hits the Streets, Helps You Find Places to Go

When we chatted with the Indian startup PlayCez last summer, one co-founder promised that the social venue recommendation service would soon get a mobile app. And here it is. The new PlayCez app for Android now joins its HTML5 mobile website in providing listings of nearby restaurants or shops, filtered by how strongly they’re recommended by your Facebook buddies. Along with the newly-released app for Android - with an iPhone version still in the works - PlayCez’s Ashwani Gaur has other bits of good news about the progress of the service. ...

Foursquare Introduces Sakura Badge To Tokyo Users

Foursquare Introduces Sakura Badge To Tokyo Users

Is Foursquare trying to become the mayor of Asia? It kinda looks like it. After introducing a special Lion City badge for Singapore users, Foursquare launched the Sakura Badge this past Friday evening for its Tokyo users. All you have to do is to check-in at five of the 64 Tokyo spots on Foursquare that are listed for this Sakura badge. These are popular locations in the city including Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku. Foursquare has made some amazing progress in Tokyo. According to its data last year, Shibuya and Shinjuku were ranked second and third ...

Hello Boy Scouts: Foursquare Introduces Lion City Badge For Singapore

Hello Boy Scouts: Foursquare Introduces Lion City Badge For Singapore

Finally, right? Singaporeans love Foursquare so much that the location-based network now has a dedicated badge for them. It’s simple to get the badge. Just check in to five of the Singapore spots (there are 71 in total) and you will be awarded the Lion City Badge! How cool is that? What can you do with the badge? Nothing much, I think. But for the many badge lovers/chasers on Foursquare, it could still mean a lot. And for Foursquare, it will bring them more check-ins and usage time. Foursquare’s Lion City badge ...

India’s Check-in Service Mojostreet Finds One Mobile Platform Outperforms Others

India’s Check-in Service Mojostreet Finds One Mobile Platform Outperforms Others

Earlier this year we told you about Indian location-based service Mojostreet, a promising start-up that received $350,000 in funding in April. As we mentioned before, the service is very much a check-in service like Foursquare or Gowalla, but with an interesting twist that allows you to use Mojobucks to buy a location (ala Monopoly). Read more about how it works in our previous piece. We just received some stats from the service’s founder Kaylan providing some insights into how mobile users are using Mojostreet. It might surprise you which mobile platform ...

Clingle: A New Location-based Discovery App in Singapore and India. Will it Work?

Clingle: A New Location-based Discovery App in Singapore and India. Will it Work?

Update: Clingle insists that it is not another Foursquare or SCVNGR. Vignesh emailed me repeatedly wanting me to tell our readers that "Clings" is its main feature where users can leave messages at their favorite locations using text, pic, audio or even video. Well, Foursquare and SCVNGR have the same commenting feature too, isn't it? The only difference is that Clingle offers audio/video. We have covered a lot of new and rising mobile apps in Singapore in recent weeks, including LobangClub, Summon Auntie, and Popcorn. Now, there’s one more new app ...

Foursquare Adds Indonesian Language, But Lacks Accuracy

Foursquare Adds Indonesian Language, But Lacks Accuracy

On its blog, Foursquare has announced that it has added Bahasa Indonesia and four other languages (Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Thai) to their BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android apps. With people in Indonesia being some of the world’s keenest social media users, Foursquare has pushed forward its effort to localize its service so that the users here can feel closer to it. To use the Foursquare app in Bahasa Indonesia, simply get this weekend’s app update, and ensure your phone is set to your native language. Foursquare has also updated its website ...

Digu Takes 25% of Chinese Check-in Market

Digu Takes 25% of Chinese Check-in Market

Here are some interesting stats this morning about China’s location-based check-in market. According to a report from research firm Analysys International, Digu.com cornered 25% of the market in the first quarter of 2011. Together with Jiepang and Qieke (11.8% and 9.8% respectively), the top three services account for nearly half of the entire market. A previous study by Analysys reported 6.55 million location-based service accounts in China at the end of Q1, but that the growth rate has seen a significant drop. It’s interesting to contrast the numbers being posted in ...

Jiepang CEO, David Liu, Talks Check-Ins and Strategy [INTERVIEW]

Jiepang CEO, David Liu, Talks Check-Ins and Strategy [INTERVIEW]

Jiepang.com launched in May of 2010, and within a month was already gaining traction, as quite a number of China's smartphone-toting youngsters jumped at the chance to 'check-in' and 'shout-out' - sharing their offline activities (the shops, bars, and restaurants that they're at) with their online buddies. (See my review of Jiepang and its apps). A few days ago, Jiepang's CEO and founder, David Liu (pictured, above), took some time to talk with me over the phone from Beijing HQ, to talk about their users' needs, brand tie-ups, testing out NFC, ...

Going Out, Checking-in, and Being Seen: a Look at Jiepang [REVIEW]

With over 100,000 people making check-ins every week, the indie Jiepang.com is China's biggest location-based service (LBS) - a social-network for sharing where you are, and what you're up to. As such, it's time for a review of its service and its apps. Then, for an interview with Jiepang's CEO and founder, check back here on Penn-Olson on Monday, for word on the company's brand and celebrity tie-ups, social strategy, and future ambitions (UPDATE: Monday; here's the interview). Apps and Social Connections So, the review... Since Jiepang check-ins can only be made ...

China’s Location-Based Service Market Hits 6.55 Million Accounts

China’s Location-Based Service Market Hits 6.55 Million Accounts

A study by EnfoDesk released via Analysys International revealed that China reached 6.55 million location-based accounts by the end of the first quarter this year. Location-based services in China includes Jiepang, Bedo, and Dianping. Jiepang, which recently partnered with Louis Vuitton for a location-based campaign in China, reported that it has over one million users in the same statement. The rest of the five million accounts are shared among the remaining location-based services in China. The figure pales when compared to Foursquare’s six million users which was reported back in January. Foursquare probably ...

Social Commerce, The Next Big Thing in Indonesia?

Social Commerce, The Next Big Thing in Indonesia?

Social commerce has come a long way, and Indonesia is starting to jump on board as well. We’re seeing start-ups like idBlogNetwork and AdaDiskon empowering product promotion/e-commerce through social media. Social network turned social commerce platform, Multiply, also recently entered Indonesia hoping to socialize e-commerce in the country. As the term 'social commerce' suggests, this brand of commerce requires that a social layer be established before actual selling can take place. Indonesia is undoubtedly one of the largest social media nations in the world, but its social layer - when compared to its ...

Foursquare in Southeast Asia: Statistics, Culture and Marketing

Foursquare in Southeast Asia: Statistics, Culture and Marketing

Foursquare is often associated with U.S users. But in actual fact, Foursquare is huge in Southeast Asia too. It was only highlighted thanks to a report by Oliver Woods, embedded below. Here's a quick run down of Foursquare in Southeast Asia: Indonesia has 312,000 Foursquare users and also a Badge Mafia to "reward" users who would do anything to get badges on the location-based social network. Malaysian budget airline, Firefly, has more than 4,000 people following its Foursquare page. Malaysia has 136,000 Foursquare users. Singapore has 48,000 users and has a dedicated Foursquare user ...
