Yesterday, as rumors swirled in the Chinese media that Google Maps had missed an important filing deadline and might be forced to shut down in China, we reported that such a shutdown was unlikely. Later in the afternoon, China's Bureau of Mapping and Surveying confirmed that it was all just a rumor. That filing deadline Google supposedly missed? Yeah, they actually turned the application in early. Like, three-months-ago early. The bureau sent information to Sina Tech stating that Google Maps indeed applied for the license back in November 2011, well before ...
Is Google Maps China About to Be Shut Down? Probably Not.

China News Service is reporting today that Google Maps may be on its way out in China. If true, the loss would impact millions of Android smartphone users who use the built-in mapping service to navigate on their phones. It would also be great news for Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) and other Chinese net firms with mapping services. It appears, however, that this report isn't accurate. Google has applied for a maps license, it turns out, and from what I can tell, a disturbance of Google Maps service in China seems unlikely. Penn ...
China’s Ku6 to Become YouTube Content Partner, Targets New Audience
byRick MartininBusiness, Web
Chinese streaming video website Ku6 (NASDAQ:KUTV) announced this morning that it will become a YouTube content partner, and distribute its videos on a new Ku6 YouTube channel. After the announcement, Ku6 shares, which had fallen below a dollar a month ago, enjoyed a bit of a resurgence today (see chart below). By becoming a channel operator, Ku6 can distribute its video content to a wider audience. We got in touch with a Ku6 representative this afternoon who tells us that user-generated content will be the main priority, but self-produced content ...
India High Court on Google, Facebook: Like China, We Will Block All Such Websites
byRick MartininAsia, Social Media, Web
Back in December we told you about India’s intent to ban offensive online material, and how internet companies like Google and Facebook were being asked to control the content distrubuted on their platforms. And just yesterday, according to The Hindustan Times, Justice Suresh Kait of the Delhi High Court ominously warned: Like China we will block all such websites. The initial complaint against the internet companies was filed by journalist Vinay Rai, and subsequently representatives of 21 internet services, including Facebook, Google, and Yahoo were summoned to court. Here on PO ...
Baidu Launches “Share” Beta in Search Results

byC. CusterinBusiness, Social Media, Web
Earlier today, the folks at China Internet Watch spotted an interesting thing in some of Baidu's (NASDAQ:BIDU) search results -- they had a thumbs-up logo and a number next to them. It actually looks very similar to Facebook's "Like" feature, although it is also being compared with Google's implementation of the Google Plus +1 button in its search results for obvious reasons. It turns out that Baidu is beta testing integration of its Baidu Share social bookmarking service with its search results. The number listed next to the thumbs-up indicates the ...
Google Translate for Android Adds Handwriting Recognition, Supports Japanese and Chinese

byRick MartininMobile, Web
The Google Translate app for Android just added an experimental handwriting recognition support for a number of languages: English, French, Italian, and German – but perhaps far more importantly, for Japanese and Chinese. The unique challenge for anyone who struggles with understanding these last two, is that it’s often very hard to look them up since they aren’t based on the alphabet. But looking up characters in a dictionary can be a chore, particularly Chinese characters, since you need to be familiar with radicals and even then it’s a pain. ...
LG Looks to Show off Google TV at CES 2012

LG (066570:KS) has just announced that it will be introducing a Google TV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas which kicks off next week. The television will feature an Android-based user interface, as well as LG’s Magic Remote Qwerty (a remote with a qwerty keyboard). The television will also have 3D functionality, although personally I find the Smart TV functions more attractive (sorry, I really hope 3D dies this year!). LG’s promo picture of its new television shows an assortment of web-related functions, something which I usually find far ...
Read Us On Google Currents

byRick MartininAsia, Mobile
So Google Currents launched a few weeks back. It’s a Flipboard-style news reading app that lets you consume content on your mobile or tablet. We were a little curious to find out more about it, and we also thought it would be useful to make our PO articles available there for whoever likes to read that way. You'll need the Currents app (iOS/Android) on your phone first of course, and from there you can click over to our Google Currents page, and boom! PO is now one of your current ...
Hatsune Miku Dominates Digital, Stars in New 3DS Game, Google Chrome Ad

byRick MartininCreative, Gaming
About a month back we told you about how CyberAgent America was collaborating with Crypton Future Media to bring the famous virtual star Hatsune Miku into Pico World. And the iconic Vocaloid character hasn’t slowed down since. During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, a trailer for a new game Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai was unveiled by Nintendo (TYO:7974) and Sega. Check it out below. While I can’t claim to be a devoted fan of Hatsune Miku, I’m pretty amazed by how the character has managed to permeate so many ...

Here are a dozen of the most significant Android-related stories we’ve covered at PO in the past year, in no particular order. But a noticeable absentee was China, ...
Samsung Dominates Android in China, But Tablets Growing Less Popular [INFOGRAPHIC]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Gadgets, Mobile, Web
The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. The Chinese mobile analytics company Umeng has released new stats which give us a clear picture of the Android user-base and the devices being used in China. It shows us that in Q3 2011 Samsung (005930.KS) and HTC (TPE:2498) dominated the Android scene here, together accounting for about 53 percent of all phone traffic detected by Umeng. Bizarrely, it also reveals that Android tablets have become less popular this quarter, with decreased usage from Q2 ...
