There are a lot of nice things a foreign tourist could buy on a trip to mainland China - handicrafts, silk, porcelain - but an Android phone or tablet should be at the bottom of your list. In fact, they should be avoided altogether. Why? Because the vast majority of Android devices sold in the country have been heavily modified by either the mobile telco or a shady third-party grey-importer - rendering your gadget perhaps devoid of the Android Market, and/or a security risk that could be sending sensitive data ...

Google Japanese Input Now Available on Android

On Tuesday we told you about Baidu Japan’s pickup of Simeji, a Japanese input method editor (IME) for Android. Well, it seems Android users now have another Japanese IME option available as the big G just rolled out its own. While I can’t pretend to be an experienced user of Japanese mobile IME’s, many of the features that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has included make a lot of sense. Among those convenient features, here are a few that stand out: Type “きょう” (today) to get today’s date, or “いま” (now) to get ...
Has Google Dropped to Third Place in China? [STATS]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business, Web
New data from web analytics company CNZZ suggests that Google (NASQAQ:GOOG) is now in third place in China in terms of search engine traffic - pushed down by the rise of Sohu’s (NASDAQ:SOHU) Sogou.com. But a note of caution: analytical methods can vary greatly, and CNZZ’s numbers have always been greater for the smaller search engine rivals than the stats from, say, Enfodesk, that we’ve used in the past. Here’s the most recent data for November, in terms of traffic: Nonetheless, if anyone was going to steal Google’s tenuous second position in ...
Google Archives Japan’s Disaster Zones on Street View

byRick MartininAsia, Business, Web
After initially announcing its plans back in July to digitally archive the devastation from the 3/11 earthquake and tsunami, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has finally made those images available for viewing via its Street View feature. There is also a special Build the Memory website set up where you can compare before and after images of certain areas, showing the immense damage that was suffered by locales in Northeastern Japan . I've included an example of a map view below, showing what happened in Onagawa, in Miyagi prefecture. In their blog post, Google ...
Asia Loves Android Apps, Has Most Downloads Per Capita [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. To commemorate its 10 billion apps milestone, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has released a great infographic which shows more details about Android’s astounding achievements. Now with over one billion app downloads every 30 days, Android’s growth shows no signs of slowing. And according to Google, Asia sits at the core of that growth. Their graphic shows that four of the top five “app-crazed countries” are in Asia: South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. The ...
We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Circle: AKB48 Members Join Google+
byRick MartininSocial Media, Web
Thanks to Asiajin for pointing out that Google+ has just been invaded by famous Japanese pop idols AKB48, as well as their lesser known (at least to me) sister groups SKE48 and NMB48. What’s interesting here is that Google has created a ‘Project 48’ page, from which fans can find their favorite star, and click through to view their Google+ profile. It’s a big catch for Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) of course, as the many of AKB48’s fans will now jump on the Google+ platform to keep tabs on their favorite stars. ...
Because Outdoors is for Suckas: Google, Baidu Now Feature Indoor Maps

byRick MartininMobile, Web
I noticed a blog post today over on Baidu’s blog (NASDAQ:BIDU) , Baidu Beat, that the company had rolled out indoor maps. What a coincidence, says I, reaching for my China copycat brush — didn’t Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) just roll out indoor maps last week? But seeing as how Baidu’s post made no mention of any launch date, I thought I’d drop them a quick inquiry first. Turns out that Baidu actually launched this feature back in October, a representative tells us, and the company already has over 500 participating malls ...
As India Pushes For Ban on Offensive Content, Facebook Responds
byRick MartininAsia, Web
India’s communications minister Kapil Sibal today affirmed the nation’s intent to ban offensive online material, after making requests to internet companies such as Facebook, Google and other internet companies to control their distribution. The AFP quotes Sibal as saying: Three months back we saw that Google, Yahoo!, Facebook had images which could be an insult to Indians, especially religious-minded people … We told them to find a way that such insulting images are not uploaded. We gave them some time … but there was no response. He added that the internet ...
Games Back in South Korea’s Android Market

When the South Korean government announced that all games would need to be approved by the games rating board before being sold in the country, both Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) removed the games sections from their online markets (iTunes and Android Market, respectively) rather than face the prospect of trying to get every single game app approved. Now, that regulation has been changed, and the apps are coming back! Well, the Android ones are anyway. According to the Android Developers Blog the games section is already back up on the ...
Baidu’s Plan to Help Businesses in China

byRick MartininWeb
Reuters is reporting today that Baidu plans to invest 3 billion yuan (that’s $470.6 million) by the end of 2012 to help the nation’s small- and medium-sized business expand. The investment will see Baidu grooming “100,000 search marketing professionals, help small- and medium-sized enterprises develop their service platforms, provide free marketing about less developed regions and help government departments in their research on business” (Reuters). The company’s plan will begin in Beijing, Shanxi, Henan, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, and then will expand to other provinces from there. As we noted ...
“People’s Search Engine” Jike Won’t Totally Imitate Google (But Maybe It Should)

Last year, state-owned Party mouthpiece newspaper People's Daily decided to get into the search game and launched Goso.cn. Perhaps because that name was widely criticized as derivative of already-existing search services Sogou and Soso, they later changed the name to Jike. Jike CEO Deng Yaping was in the news this morning, as she said that Google was "worth learning from" and that it "promotes American values and democracy around the world." And although she promised Jike won't just "blindly follow Google" and will walk its own path, she also said that ...
Google Talks Google+ Business Pages, Android, and HTML5 in Jakarta

byJoshua KevininAsia, Web
Google DevFest 2011 in Jakarta was the last of the Southeast Asia series of events, held two days ago at the JW Marriott Hotel in Indonesia’s capital. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) accepted around 300 to 400 Google technology users, enthusiasts and of course, developers. It promised to be a full day of geek pleasure, and it was indeed a satisfying one, for this blogger included. Google talked about the Google+ platform, Android, HTML5, Google Apps (APIs, new features, best practices), OAuth and OpenID, and Google Cloud. I will write most of the summary of ...
