Google+ is gaining new users at a pretty insane rate, and Indian users are second only to the US in terms of being the keenest G+ early adopters. From a sampling of 1 million people on the site, 5.88 percent are based in India. US users dominate the site for the time being, accounting for just over 49 percent. MTV India was the first Indian brand site to spring into life on the site on June 30th. However, with Google+ gaining new devotees so quickly, it's worth noting that Google's buzzing SNS ...

Baidu Catalogs Android Apps for its Own Online App Store

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business
Baidu has opened an online store for Android apps, accessible only from Android smartphones on the Baidu Mobile homepage. China's search giant is not hosting the apps, and is merely aggregating them from a number of China's third-party app stores. At the moment the Baidu Android catalog is promoting two of its own apps, as well as ad-supported versions of the wildly popular Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja games. After searching and selecting an app, a user can download it in just one click from Baidu's own page, with no need to ...
Google Earth, Street View As Historical Record in Japan

byRick MartininWeb
A couple of months back we summed up the many ways that Google services were being used to help Japan after the March 11 earthquake. Today we learned about two more worthwhile projects in Japan, both involving Google’s mapping technologies as historical record. Hiroshima Archive This is an impressive implementation of Google Earth as a medium in which to present the survivors' accounts of the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima. An extension of the Nagasaki Archive (video), the Hiroshima Archive is a project that aims to document history from those who experienced it ...
Google To Rebrand Blogger and Picasa, But What About Orkut?

byWillis WeeinAsia, Web
Google+ is creating buzz in Asia and across the world. From time to time, I see friends requesting a Google+ invite in my Facebook or Twitter stream. A report from Mashable explained that both Picasa and Blogger are going to be rebranded and eventually merged with Google+. So what about the fate of Orkut, a Google-owned social networking product, widely used in Brazil and India? It turns out that the company believes that Orkut and Google+ are two different products, but it did hint that integration could be possible in the future. Here’s ...
Google+ Has Been Throttled to Death – Now Blocked in China

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Web
Well, that was quick. Just six days ago, a number of western media outlets used a ping website to check the availability of the new Google+ social network in China, and wrongly jumped to the conclusion that it was blocked. At the time, I posted a rebuttal, which garnered international coverage, to show that plus.google.com was available but working slowly in China, and likely being "throttled" in the same way as is Gmail here. But, no more. I've tested Google+ first-hand on all three of China's broadband or mobile networks: on ...
Tencent to Bring Malware-free Certification to Android Apps in China

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business
Malware-ridden Android apps have been a concern for some time now - and the most dangerous place for these is on China's third-party app stores. That's why the App Store Connect (ASC) publishers - which distributes some international apps in China - has teamed up with Tencent's new Mobile Security Lab to bring peace-of-mind to Chinese app downloaders. Tencent's new security labs are ostensibly for the development of their own suite of mobile anti-virus apps, but for the first time Tencent is opening up the labs to a partner. The deal ...

Baidu Japan Posts Losses Totaling RMB 700 million since 2008
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business
Baidu Search dominates its Chinese homeland, but it's struggling elsewhere - its biggest overseas venture in Japan, Baidu.jp, has filed losses of RMB 700 million (US$108.3 million) since 2008. Baidu Japan actually opened in 2007, but required a relaunch in '08 after a shaky start. Those accumulated losses seem to have been sunk into general running and admin costs. The Japanese search engine market is dominated by Yahoo, although Yahoo search is now powered by Google in Japan. This graphic, from SearchEngineWatch.com, reveals that Yahoo Japan holds 56.2% of the marketshare ...
Google Android Outgrows Apple in Japan Smartphone Market
byRick MartininAsia, Business, Web
According to a new report from comScore Japan KK, both Google Android and Apple are showing excellent growth in the smartphone space in Japan. But Google is winning over customers at a much faster rate to start 2011. While Apple put up a very solid 17 percent growth over the past six months to reach 3.9 million mobile subscribers, Android has doubled it’s subscriber base in the last three months alone to reach 4.6 million in March. Both companies are clearly doing well, but Android’s recent trajectory has given it the ...
