Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iTunes App Store has rolled out a major upgrade this morning in China, and now, for the first time, it actually accepts payments in the local currency, the renminbi (RMB). As part of the new RMB payment system, the China iTunes Store now accepts local bank cards - from over a dozen major Chinese banks - but not third-party payment platforms such as Alibaba’s Alipay, Union Pay, or the American Paypal. In the past, Apple required a credit card that was able to process US dollar transactions, which left ...

Tencent Launches a Shanzhai iTunes to Sync Your iPhone, iPad
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Web
Tencent (HKG:0700), China’s social media giant, has thumbed its nose at Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) by releasing a desktop ‘App Assistant for iPhone’ (pictured above) that effectively replaces iTunes. Tencent’s new app syncs iPhones, iPads, and even any iPod Touch with Windows PCs, transferring over your mp3s, e-books, photos, contacts, and apps. As a bonus feature, it makes Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, swear like a fisherman in a storm. The new App Assistant for iPhone was launched as an early beta late last week, and follows a similar foray into mobile syncing ...
iTools is an Alternative Universe iTunes App Where Jailbreaking is Encouraged
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Web
Owners of iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches have a fairly new desktop app for Windows called iTools, which can be used instead of Apple's own iTunes. It's possibly the first-ever unofficial method of fully syncing-up your Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) mobile devices - and it positively encourages you to jailbreak and snag some pirated apps. Of course, jailbreaking is perfectly legal and can be a gateway to some neat features and customizations, but app developers won't be too amused by the implications of losing yet more revenue to pirated apps. Made by a ...
Tencent Launches an ‘iTunes for Android,’ Gives Google a Syncing Feeling

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Gadgets, Mobile
Just as nature abhors a vacuum, Chinese web companies are amazingly good at filling a niche in the market. And so it follows that Tencent yesterday launched an Android management app that’s a sort of ‘iTunes for Android.’ As Android rockets in popularity in China, there’s obviously a huge hole to be filled by the lack of an Android equivalent of iTunes. That’s what Tencent’s new ‘App Assistant for Android’ aims to be. It’s a Windows app for managing everything about your Android phone over USB or wifi - downloading ...

So far, the app has attracted over 100,000 downloads on the Mac App store. A pretty cool achievement for an app that is just a couple months old. Murakoshi recently visited Singapore and demonstrated his app live at PennUp and at Hackerspace.sg. MoSo essentially helps users to create fun looking videos within a few clicks. Unlike other video creator software, the Japanese video editing Mac app isn’t restricted by a time ...

The app provides over 70 recipes created by renowned chefs in Singapore with choices over Chinese, Malay, Indian or Western cuisines. A user can search for recipes based on calorie level and save them within their shopping list for future reference. For Mac users, you can even sync your diary content to your laptop’s calendar. Developed by the folks at Codigo(check out this iPad magazine too), Healthy Chef on ...

Steply is a Mobile Photo App Network with 3.5 Million Downloads
byWillis WeeinAsia, Web
Hong Kong based mobile start-up, Steply, is building a giant network of photo apps on Apple iTunes. Unlike any other photo app company, Steply is focused on building a platform that allows multiple photo apps with multiple styles and functions to share to the same mobile community. This is possible through Steply's software development kit (SDK) which allows developers to add the community directly inside their app. Launched in August 2010, Steply currently has 8 applications in its network, including Labelbox, Photo mess, Retro Camera and PhotoShake. Steply is also seed funded ...
Apple Starts Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief in U.S

byWillis WeeinAsia, Web
Apple became the latest company to launch a Japan earthquake and tsunami donation campaign. On Apple.com, a button for the Japan earthquake relief linked to iTunes can be found at the bottom of the page. I can’t access the donation page initially but soon realized that the link only works for U.S citizens. Out of curiosity, I did a search and found that the Los Angeles Times has also written on Apple’s effort. Full credit to LA Times for the screenshot as well. Big or small, donors can make an effort ...

In short, it is a fun and easy way to organize hangouts with friends and follow their activities, all through the app. CNet calls it the “Foursquare of the future”. We’re glad to spread the word that Found goes live ...
10 Successful Facebook Business Pages
With Facebook launching its redesigned pages for businesses early this year, many have flocked into the social media site, hoping to leverage this free function to increase their online presence. And expectedly, not all pages turned out to be successful. In fact, most turned out to be disastrous. So, how do we define a successful page? And which are the businesses that made it? Although many of us believe in quantitative measures, the number of fans is definitely not the only yardstick to measure a page's success. In my opinion, a successful ...
