Baidu Breaks Ground on New International HQ – But Not in Beijing

Baidu Breaks Ground on New International HQ – But Not in Beijing

Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), China’s biggest search engine, has today broken ground on a new campus building that will eventually be home to 10,000 employees. Located in Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province, right on the border with Hong Kong, it’s scheduled to be ready in 2015. It is being dubbed the Baidu International Building until it gets a proper name in English. Across its two main towers it covers an area of 220,000 square meters, making it twice the size of the company’s HQ in Beijing. It’s a huge boost for Shenzhen where ...

Baidu Wants to Help You Waste More Time Watching TV

Baidu Wants to Help You Waste More Time Watching TV

In good news for square-eyed fans of TV shows, the web apps on the front page of Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), China’s biggest search engine, now alert users to when a new episode of their favourite show is available online. Just add a TV series into the bookmarks section of the site (as pictured above) and it’ll give out alerts on a daily or weekly basis, depending on when the show airs. According to the Baidu blog today, among its claimed 500 million users, “roughly 20 percent of all searches are for TV ...

Youku’s Video Search Engine is Blocked by Several Rivals

Youku’s Video Search Engine is Blocked by Several Rivals

In a sign of growing hostility amongst video-streaming services in China, three such sites have reportedly blocked access to a video search engine owned by the market leader, Youku (NYSE:YOKU). Its Soku.com search feature indexes and lists videos from across the Chinese web, including those of its rivals. But Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO), LeTV, and Sohu’s (NASDAQ:SOHU) video portal have all teamed up to tackle Youku over what they claim to be unfair search results on Soku. And so the Tudou, LeTV, and Sohu TV sites have blocked Soku from indexing its content, ...

Sina to Spin-Off, Then Invest In, Its Product Search Engine in 2012

Sina to Spin-Off, Then Invest In, Its Product Search Engine in 2012

The Chinese web portal Sina (NASDAQ:SINA) has confirmed that in February 2012 it will spin-off its product and real-estate search engine, Yiqisoo, and then invest in it. The input of cash will reportedly total 10 million RMB (US$1.58 million), and coincide with the site focusing only on home electronics and personal gadgets, which are termed ‘3C’ items. 2012 looks set to see a product search engine war, as Alibaba’s Etao - which has proved controversial this year - faces off against Netease’s (NASDAQ:NTES) planned spin-off from Youdao.com, which will also focus ...

Apple Rates Qunar’s Mobile Effort As Best Chinese-Made Travel App

Apple Rates Qunar’s Mobile Effort As Best Chinese-Made Travel App

Qunar, the online travel site which attracted over US$300 million of investment from Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) earlier this year, has proved to be the best Chinese travel app on iOS (pictured above) according to some end-of-year awards from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). But Qunar actually snapped up only the runner-up prize in Apple China’s ‘best travel app’ category, as it got leap-frogged by the Chinese-language version of the French-made Fotopedia app (pictured below), which took the award from Apple. Nonetheless, it means that Baidu’s investment beat off a whole host of local rivals such ...

Product Search Engines a New Battleground in China, as Netease Ups Its Armory

Product Search Engines a New Battleground in China, as Netease Ups Its Armory

The Chinese internet company Netease (NASDAQ:NTES) will launch its own separate product search engine next year, according to the company’s VP, Jin Lei. At present, Netease has a general web search engine - Youdao.com, which has less than one percent of market share - which already has a shopping search function (pictured above). But clearly Netease deems China’s B2C e-commerce market to be massive enough to warrant a stronger strategic push into making a product search engine. But Mr. Jin did not specify how the new venture will improve on what ...

“People’s Search Engine” Jike Won’t Totally Imitate Google (But Maybe It Should)

“People’s Search Engine” Jike Won’t Totally Imitate Google (But Maybe It Should)

Last year, state-owned Party mouthpiece newspaper People's Daily decided to get into the search game and launched Goso.cn. Perhaps because that name was widely criticized as derivative of already-existing search services Sogou and Soso, they later changed the name to Jike. Jike CEO Deng Yaping was in the news this morning, as she said that Google was "worth learning from" and that it "promotes American values and democracy around the world." And although she promised Jike won't just "blindly follow Google" and will walk its own path, she also said that ...

Yahoo Search Trends: SEA Games 2011 in Indonesia

The biggest sports event in South East Asia (SEA) — the SEA Games 2011 — has just ended, and it was a proud moment for host country Indonesia. In support of Indonesia, Yahoo Indonesia launched an activity called Yahoo! Buka Dunia that started together with the SEA Games 2011 Torch Relay. The goal was to to give a first hand experience of the Internet to students, teachers, and others in 20 cities across Java and Sumatra. Asia Tech Tour Episode 1: Kakaku.com from Japan [VIDEO]

This is episode 1 of our Asia Tech Tour video series Tech Tour Video series. If there’s any Asian service or app that you’d like to see us explore, please send us your request. Kakaku.com is a pretty fascinating price-comparison engine that I use quite a bit here in Japan. There are a number of cool features that I find myself coming back to regularly, namely the handy ‘price down’ list which shows products whose price have recently dropped, as well as a informative graph that shows the change in price over ...

Etao Product Search Engine: Some E-Commerce Sites Embrace It, Some Block It

Etao Product Search Engine: Some E-Commerce Sites Embrace It, Some Block It

Etao is the product search engine that was created by Alibaba Group, China's biggest e-commerce company. But its origins are cause for reticence among some e-commerce sites. On Tuesday, we reported that 360buy has blocked Etao from crawling and indexing its site. And now the High Street retailer turned e-commerce newcomer Suning (SHE:002024) has followed suit. Suning's online store now also blocks Etao's spiders from cataloging the site (pictured above). In contrast, both Amazon China (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Gome (HKG:0493), which is a High Street electronics rival to Suning, are backing Etao.com. ...

NVC CEO Accuses Baidu of Faking News Stories for Fraudulent Ad Clients

NVC CEO Accuses Baidu of Faking News Stories for Fraudulent Ad Clients

NVC Lighting CEO Wu Changjiang is not the first person to take shots at Baidu over Sina Weibo with regards to Baidu's advertising policies. In fact, that happened just yesterday. But it's happening again, and just like yesterday, the claims being made are, well, not all entirely airtight. Trademark Violations First, Wu asserted that Baidu had granted paid advertisement space to a fake company that was essentially stealing NVC's trademarked name. And indeed, the names are ridiculously similar. See if you can spot the difference: 雷士照明 is the real company name in ...

Baidu International Launches, Aimed at Global Brands

Baidu International Launches, Aimed at Global Brands

Baidu, in partnership with China Search International, is launching 'Baidu International' ad platform today, which it touts as a service "to help advertisers globally launch, manage and optimize on Baidu." Now, before you dismiss this news, think about what it represents. It is an opportunity for the world to throw ads at China’s 500-million-strong internet users. And like it or not, Baidu is one of the best channels to reach Chinese netizens as it controls a whopping 83 percent of the Chinese search market. The launch is essentially a partnership roll-out between ...
