Steve Jobs Biography: China Pirates it, Japan Defaces it

Steve Jobs Biography: China Pirates it, Japan Defaces it

Well, that didn't take long. The official Steve Jobs biography has only been out a few days, and Chinese pirates are already selling shanzhai versions of the book in bookstores. Their covers resemble the official text, but according to this report on TechWeb, the actual text of the book is different. Unsurprisingly, downloads claiming to be the official ebook version are also popping up on many Chinese portals, in English and in Chinese, and with varying degrees of authenticity. But we guess it's a good reminder to those who might have ...

You Can’t Create A Steve Jobs

You Can’t Create A Steve Jobs

Last weekend at Qinghua University, Lee Kai-Fu shared some interesting thoughts on mobile and entrepreneurship in China. The conversation with the moderator (who is also a professor) and audience, like it or not, somehow focused too much on creating a Steve Jobs. As Lee asserted that fresh graduates are unlikely to make it into his incubator program, Innovation Works, the moderator, probably for the fun of it, argued and said that there are so many talented young people in Qinghua and China who could be the next Steve Jobs. But he later ...

16% of Apple’s Sales From China, Says CEO Cook

16% of Apple’s Sales From China, Says CEO Cook

In Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) first post-Jobs earnings call, CEO Tim Cook revealed some interesting figures regarding the company’s performance in China. Most notable was the fact that 16 percent of its quarterly revenue (for the quarter ending September 24) came from Greater China, Apple’s second largest market. That figure is up from 12 percent last fiscal year, and just two percent the year before that. Cook pointed out that it's Apple’s ‘fastest growing region by far’ with revenue up 270 percent year-over-year. He added: How far can go? Certainly in ...

Blackberry Blackout Gets Animated, RIM Claims Services Improving

RIM’s BlackBerry woes continue today as it scrambles to recover from a service disruption that has gone on since Monday. The company says that “all services across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as India, have been operating with significant improvement." The Wall Street Journal says that in Japan, where BlackBerry is carried by Docomo, domestic services are uninterrupted although users may have issues communicating with those in affected areas. The report cites a Docomo spokesperson as saying “RIM has told us that Japan isn’t among the regions where ...

Lenovo India Launches 3 Android Tablets, and Pays Tribute to Steve Jobs.

Lenovo had a big launch yesterday at the Mumbai Flying Club to announce the release of three tablets in the country. The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 64GB will sell for Rs 46,900 ($954) and is aimed at business users, with both 3G and Wi-fi versions. The Lenovo Thinkpad tablet - which runs Android 3.1 - is the business beast, and uses a 10-inch (1280x800 resolution) IPS panel with scratch-proof ...

Steve Jobs Tributes From Asia

Steve Jobs Tributes From Asia

Last week we told you about the many tributes to Steve Jobs that were happening in Asia, particularly in China. Since then we've come across more pictures and videos online that we thought we would share. And we'd like to thank you, our readers, for sending in your messages of remembrance as well. We've included many of those below too.

Why Did China’s Xiaomi Mock Steve Jobs’ Death?

Why Did China’s Xiaomi Mock Steve Jobs’ Death?

Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun, is apparently a popular figure in China as shown by the large number of fans following him on Sina Weibo. I’m doubting his team’s intelligence though, as Xiaomi’s recent comments on Sina Weibo about Steve Jobs were seriously insensitive and utterly lack respect. Sure, we all have people we might not like but to mock someone publicly who has contributed so much to the tech world after his death is going way overboard. And Xiaomi’s timing is suspect as its smartphone is poised to be launched in ...

Xiaomi, Makers of Chinese iPhone Clone, Mock Steve Jobs’s Death on Weibo

Xiaomi, Makers of Chinese iPhone Clone, Mock Steve Jobs’s Death on Weibo

While we knew Lei Jun was content to make tasteless comments about Steve Jobs's death before he had died, somehow we thought Jobs's actual passing might stop him. We were wrong. Yesterday, the official Weibo account of Xiaomi -- Lei Jun's mobile phone company, which is making a very iPhone-like handset for the Chinese market -- made a couple of tasteless tweets. First, in response to a photo someone else had tweeted with a picture of Jobs's face loaded onto an iPad at one of the country's Apple stores in an ...

Connecting The Dots

Connecting The Dots

Many publications are flashing back the brilliant things that Steve Jobs had done during his time at Apple. They are connecting Jobs' “dots” for their readers, to consider Steve Jobs’ brilliance - a perfect way to pay tribute to a great man. Jobs said in his 2005 Stanford commencement address that you can only connect the dots looking backwards. You can’t do that looking forward. True enough. There are many things in life that Jobs had done in the past that makes sense now but not at the point of time ...

“Sent From Jobs’ iPad” – Sina Weibo Pays Tribute to Steve Jobs

Today will be a hard day to forget for many of us, as people woke up to be shocked by the news that Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple, had passed away the night before. The news overwhelmed all other headlines around the globe, including here in Asia. Chinese people were among the first waking up to the astonishing news, and are deeply saddened. On Sina Weibo alone, over 35 million messages have been posted about Steve Jobs as I write this. People are paying their tributes to a ...

At Beijing’s Apple Store, Flowers for Steve Jobs [VIDEO]

Steve Jobs's death Wednesday has sent shockwaves rippling throughout the tech world, and China is no exception. You've already heard our thoughts, and we've also asked you for yours. and On Thursday morning, Penn-Olson went to Beijing's Apple Store to see how Chinese Apple fans were responding to the news of Jobs's death. Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish – Thank you, Steve Jobs

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish – Thank you, Steve Jobs

I’m sitting in front of my Macbook, stunned, and still shocked by the sad news from Apple. Steve Jobs has left us physically, but his work and inspiration will always be with us. I sound clichéd, but you and I both know that for this man, this is very true. The weird thing about influence is that you can get so affected and inspired even when you don’t get to see that person face-to-face. I always wanted to attend one of his keynotes to catch him live in action, and to ...
