Public wifi is often a nightmare for individuals, made to jump through ridiculous hoops by telcos, venues, or other providers. The Korean startup Waffle wants to make the process easier and more social for users, as well as actually profitable for businesses that need to provide wifi. Waffle, founded by Lee Min-ku (pictured below), is a platform ...

Which are the Top Twitter Nations?

byRick MartininAsia, Social Media
We recently took a look at Eric Fischer’s Twitter visualization which showed that Asia is a very chatty region when it comes to microblogging, particularly Indonesia. Now French company Semiotics has examined some data as well in order to give us an alternative view of how the world Tweets . The top 20 countries, in terms of the number of Twitter accounts, are listed below in the following chart. Not surprisingly, the US has by far the most user accounts with 107.7 million. Brazil is number two, with Japan just behind ...
China Anoints a New Most-Followed Celebrity, Way Ahead of Liu Xiang, Lady Gaga

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Social Media, Web
With the huge rise in popularity of microblogging in China, it’s sometimes overlooked that there isn’t just one Twitter-like service, but actually dozens. While Sina's Weibo tends to grab all the headlines, it’s Tencent’s service that rules the roost in terms of users - and also in terms of having the most-followed celebrity in the world. And now there’s a new global social media star who has leapt over the former number one, Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang, with a staggering 26.9 million followers. It’s TV star He Jiong. Yes, he’s not ...
Chinese New Year Sets Microblog Message Milestone, But It’s Not the First Time
byRick MartininAsia, Social Media, Web
China’s Sina Weibo is making lots of headlines today having broken the unofficial tweets-per-second record with 32,312 messages during the first minute of Chinese New Year. As noted by our friends over at The Next Web, this surpasses the the messages-per-second mark for Twitter, which was 25,088 Tweets-per-second, set by Japanese users during an anime broadcast back in December. But this isn’t the only year that Sina's (NASDAQ:SINA) Weibo set a microblogging milestone, although it might be the first year that the West really paid attention. A little big of digging ...
China Has No Innovation? Look Closer

byVanessa TaninAsia, Business, Creative
I gave a sharing session at the National University of Singapore last Wednesday about my experience living in China for a year. I am currently in my last semester at NUS majoring in Communications and New Media, with a very fun minor in ‘Technopreneurship.’ In order to obtain my Technopreneurship minor, I opted for a global immersion project called the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program. In my case, I was attached to an Innovation Works’ invested startup called XingCloud, and took courses at Tsinghua University. Before I could even share ...
AdStars Appointed As UberSocial Advertising Partner in Indonesia

byJoshua KevininBusiness, Social Media, Web
Adstars is an ad network company which has shown very fast growth. And now it has been chosen as the exclusive in-country advertising partner for Twitter app UberSocial in Indonesia by UberMedia. It is indeed a big step forward for them to build on their mobile advertising momentum thus far. UberMedia’s VP of advertising, David B. Palan, noted: We had been working with AdStars throughout 2011 and have been impressed with their performance and professionalism. In October we decided to make them our exclusive in-country advertising partner and ...
Is Indonesia the World’s Chattiest Twitter Nation?

byRick MartininAsia, Social Media
Some of you may recall earlier in the year when we looked at the Eric Fischer’s wonderful visualization of Twitter languages, and how countries in Asia were represented. Eric has recently completed another visualization, and this time it shows not just who is talking, but also with whom they are speaking. According to Eric, “Green is physical movement from place to place; purple is @replies from someone in one location to someone in another; combining to white where there is both.” In the map above, you can can see the ...

The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. Singapore has always punched above its size in the world’s economy, and so it’s no surprise that its citizens are so wired and engaged with gadgets and social media. Indeed, the island state has the highest concentration of smartphones anywhere in the world, and over three-quarters of its citizens access the web every single day. Singaporeans are social on the web, too, with people there spending about one hour each day engaging with other folks ...
Web, Smartphones, and Social Media are Thriving in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau [INFOGRAPHIC]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Social Media, Web
The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. Across Asia, countries seem to be split into those who’re well hooked-up to the high-speed web, and those who access instead from mobiles and PC cafés - with only mainland China somewhat torn between those two states of being. But in the Greater China area, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau are certainly in the first group - enjoying high rates of internet penetration on an uncensored web whilst also having over 100 percent phone ownership, ...
Who Needs PCs? Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos Opt For the Mobile Web [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are areas that don’t get too much coverage in the tech press - but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t interesting phenomena in the way its web and tech scene are developing. Vietnam is especially one to watch, with a fledgeling start-up scene empowered by game-development successes that are attracting a lot of investment from Japan. Across these three countries, mobile is proving especially revolutionary - getting people not just talking, but ...
5 Ways Twitter’s New Redesign Makes It More Like Sina Weibo
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Social Media, Web
Twitter’s slick new redesign has brought it - visually and practically - closer to China’s most dynamic microblogging platform, Sina’s (NASDAQ:SINA) Weibo. It shows, perhaps, that Sina’s rapid rate of change on its most popular service is now actually leading the way for Twitter. How the tables have turned! More seriously, though, the two companies have a very different philosophy, so we won’t engage in the kind of “copycat” name-calling that we usually discourage. Whereas Twitter has been evolving very slowly, and espouses “simplicity,” Sina has been throwing major new features ...
Social and Mobile, This is How India Enjoys the Internet [INFOGRAPHIC]
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Social Media, Web
The Infographic of the Day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. India and China are often mentioned in the same breath, as Asia’s powerhouse economies. But on the web, the two countries are developing very differently, with India’s younger demographics - half the nation is under the age of 25 - making the best of poor broadband infrastructure by going online and engaging in social media on their mobiles instead. And that’s great, because the web needn’t be trapped inside a weighty, underpowered old desktop ...
