Thanks to Chiyo over on Asiajin for pointing out Toyota’s new Social Network Racer Facebook game/promotion. While I’m not personally a big fan of playing Facebook games, there’s clearly some strong potential for companies to use the platform as a way to spread brand awareness. Perhaps even more than Comnico’s Puma Facebook game we mentioned the earlier in the week, Social Network Racer is game that encourages you to post high scores and share them with friends. But you can also earn in-game credits by sharing as well, which will ...

A Peek at Asia’s Email through Yahoo’s Mail Visualization Project

byRick MartininAsia, Web
If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know that we like fun visualizations. So when we came across Yahoo’s shiny new Mail Visualization Project just now, we couldn’t help but stop and play around for a while. It’s actually kind of cool, in that it shows the flow of email sent and received, showing the most common words (that Yahoo says are anonymized). The flow of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ email here is interesting to watch. If our run-through is any indication, the spam protection is not air-tight, given the ...

Thanks to the folks over at ZDNet for pointing out that YouTube has just launched a localized Singapore site (with a very sharp logo, see right), which can be accessed at YouTube.com.sg. YouTube says that this will be a boost to local content creators and providers. The report cites YouTube Asia-Pacific director of product management Adam Smith, who points out that the new site should go a long way towards building Singapore’s conversation with the rest of the world through video: Through localizing YouTube in Singapore, the site will deliver more of ...

Dubbed the “Oprah of China,” Yang Lan is a journalist, talk-show hostess, and an entrepreneur who has experience living and working in the U.S and China. One of my friends sent me her TED video and I find it pretty engaging. Especially for folks who are trying to understand China. In a nutshell, Yang Lan talks about how the younger generation is remaking China. Her speech emphasizes microblogs, both Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo, in China which are used as a medium/voice for the younger generation in the country. And as ...

byHu ShenginAsia, Social Media, Web
Kandian is a new social TV service from Sina, launched over the weekend. Essentially, it’s a multimedia viewing and sharing service linked closely to Sina’s own Weibo platform. Users can upload or live-stream - in a manner similar to the Americam site, Justin.tv - and then share and discuss the content with friends. In addition to user-generated content, there are some proper TV channels on the site that can be streamed for free. The site is still in private beta. The UI design of Kandian.com is simple and clean. The navigation ...

byRick MartininVideo
Stanford Business has put the footage of Jack Ma’s recent speech online. The Alibaba CEO raised eyebrows on both sides of the ocean when he says - very deliberately - that he was “very interested in Yahoo” during the talk. But the entire talk is worth a watch if you have an hour to spare. He talks with a lot of passion about the success of Alibaba, but also alludes their many mistakes and difficulties, including Taobao’s intellectual property challenges. If you don’t have time to check the whole talk, you ...

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Startups, Web
LeKan is a brand-new Chinese start-up - it launched only last Friday - that aims to be a sort of Netflix for Chinese kids. It streams a whole bunch of fully-licensed cartoons and animated movies, and is designed to be safely and easily used by the children alone. It’s a subscription service, so first of all either dad or mum needs to pay the 25 RMB (US$4) per month fee. Tokyo Game Show: Interview with Taisei Yoshida of GREE

byRick MartininGaming, Mobile
If you attended the Tokyo Game Show this past weekend, chances are you saw GREE’s mammoth exhibition area, the largest one at the show. And if you didn’t see that, you likely saw one of the many GREE girls on site, or one of the schwag bags the company was passing out. The company’s massive presence at the game show is symbolic of a shift in the gaming space, one that sees new mobile players like GREE and DeNA suddenly eating the lunch of portable console gaming companies, most notably ...
