Google Search Stories are fun to watch. Many of you would probably remember the Parisian love story video which later became a Super Bowl commercial last year. The search engine even came out with a search story creator for users to create their own Google journey. And now there’s one for Taiwan too. I stumbled upon a Google Search Stories site built especially for Taiwanese in traditional Chinese. Google Taiwan is apparently trying to get local netizens to give its video search stories a shot, in the hope that it might ...

A few weeks back I was playing around with Sega’s Genpei Taisen Emaki on the iPad. It was lots of fun, so I was delighted to see recently that the company had also come out with an English version, aptly named Samurai Bloodshow. The game is a sort of Plants vs Zombies style tower defense game, although the art and the game play are far different. The battle field looks like an ancient Japanese scroll, which actually unrolls as you pan to the right. When you meet enemy samurai, the ensuing fight ...
Kickstarter-Funded Film ‘Blind’ Portrays Post-Nuclear Tokyo

byRick MartininCreative, Video
In the past we’ve written about how many creative individuals have used the crowd-funding service Kickstarter to raise money for projects or start-ups. It has proven especially useful in Japan after the March 11 earthquake, particularly in helping with measurement of radiation (see Safecast and Smart Radiation Detector). Those projects were very much driven by a need to find out more information about the radiation threat in Tokyo. In the absence of reliable, easy-to-understand data people get scared. And the latest Kickstarter project from Japan is an attempt to visualize ...

There’s a new, good-looking Gezbox iPhone app (now just at version 1.0) where all the action happens. That’s where you snap an image of your beloved possession (pictured right) and upload it along with a brief description, the name of the shop where you bought it, and its price. You can comment on people’s items, follow individuals ...
Nokia and Jiepang Team-Up for NFC Check-In Trials Across China

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Mobile, Video, Web
Chinese location-based service Jiepang is once again teaming up with Nokia to bring NFC-enabled check-ins to venues across China. When we spoke to Jiepang CEO and co-founder David Liu back in June, he told us that a second-round of in-the-field NFC trials was coming, and now we see what Jiepang and Nokia were cooking up. Impressively, Nokia has even released three new NFC-capable handsets to coincide with this - the Nokia 600, 700, and 701 (pictured above) - which would all work perfectly with Jiepang’s newest NFC poster check-ins. The three Symbian-Belle ...
[UPDATED] Sina Snaps Up 4% of Post-IPO Tudou
![[UPDATED] Sina Snaps Up 4% of Post-IPO Tudou](http://www.penn-olson.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Sina-Tudou-01-250x250.jpg)
bySteven MillwardinAsia, Business, Web
Rumors in the tech industry in China suggest that Sina has signed an investment agreement with the newly IPO’d video-sharing site Tudou.com (NASDAQ: TUDO), and will receive about four percent of Tudou’s shares. That values Sina’s stake in Tudou at US$40 million. Tudou’s leadership was in New York last week where they saw their company raise $174 million on its NASDAQ debut, and become valued at $2.8 billion. But its shares subsequently slumped somewhat, closing at $19.24 per share before the weekend, down from its $24 opener. The rumor states that the ...
Tudou is Running Out of Money

A Sina Tech report this morning suggests that Tudou, one of China's largest internet video sites, is facing dire financial straits. According to the company's recently released Q2 financial reports, it has about $20 million US in available cash, but its expenses for Q2 of this year were over $26 million US. As Tudou isn't currently profitable, this means that without the cash injection it would receive from an IPO, it would probably be unable to sustain all of its operations within less than half a year. Of course, Tudou is ...

bySteven MillwardinAsia, Creative
Today Sohu.com (NASDAQ:SOHU) and online game developer Changyou (NASDAQ:CYOU) flipped the switch on a brand-new, 3D multiplayer online game called The Deer and the Cauldron. Sohu's president, Mr Chen De-wen, boasts that it's the world's first 3D online game with a Hollywood-standard 3D animation engine. Launched into beta at 11am this morning for access to some of China's keenest gamers, the online game - based on a 1960s book that recounts ancient Zhou dynasty myths - took four years to develop, at a reported cost of US$80 million. The game features ...

Shanda has reportedly suspended the planned IPO of its Shanda Literature and Cloudary division, which is a digital publisher and books portal, in a sign of growing fears of volatile market conditions. One of its lead underwriters, Merrill Lynch, is thought to have withdrawn. The planned spin-off from Shanda Interactive Entertainment (NASDAQ: SNDA) was filed at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) back in May, and was due to hit stock tickers as READ. But today the Chinese press is reporting that it has been cancelled, with no set date ...

Wendi Deng (pictured in a pink jacket) is the Chinese-born third wife of the News Corporation overlord Rupert Murdoch. And now, after a speedy leap to her husband's defense when confronted with a protestor/prankster brandishing a "pie" on a paper plate, she is being lauded as a "tiger wife" by some people. In that spirit, Taiwan's Next Media group has sprung its digital animators into action, in a video that reports the event and also turns Mrs Deng, 42, into an actual, leg-mauling tiger. There's also a rather disturbing three seconds ...
