World Cup Game Breaks Twitter Record, But No Reason To Celebrate

When two of the largest Twitter nations clash for a final game - Japan vs United States - we know that the rate of tweets-per-second (TPS) is going to be high. According to Twitter, the final game commanded 7,196 tweets per second at its climax, surpassing the TPS of Prince William and Kate’s wedding and the death of Osama bin Laden, as reported by the AP. While U.S President Barack Obama was gracious enough to congratulate both teams, there were many who let their emotions get the better of them and tweeted ...

Stay Classy USA: “Japs” is Trending Topic After Japan Wins World Cup

After the Japan women’s football team beat America in penalties early this morning, there was no shortage of congratulations and from fans in the US and around the world. “Congrats Japan” was trending on Twitter, but regrettably so were a few other unfortunate phrases. Both ‘Japs’ and ‘Pearl Harbor’ also made it to the list of trending topics, as what I can only assume are long-time American soccer supporters struggling to contain their disappointment. Take @KReez_Mac for example, who might want to consider switching off his geolocation before making hateful ...

A recent  search trend report by e-commerce giant, Alibaba.com, revealed that Internet searches for cricket related products went up by 130 percent in February 2011 compared to February 2010. The reason for  such a sharp increase in searches is primarily due to the Cricket World Cup Tournament that started in February 2011. 34 percent of the growth in searches was noted in January 2011, the month prior to the start of the Cricket World Cup. Following the trend of cricket searches, the interest levels of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) producing and marketing cricket ...

Currently at number two, Nike can pat itself on the back given that it isn’t the official sponsor. Pepsi has also adopted the same ambush strategy but unfortunately, its effort is ...
