Indonesians Prefer Internet to Radio or Newspapers

Indonesians Prefer Internet to Radio or Newspapers

Yahoo and TNS worked together on a new study which revealed that Indonesian internet users are now spending more time on the Internet than they do reading newspapers or listening to the radio -- a strong indication that they are starting to abandon traditional media. The smartphone boom (such as what we see with the Blackberry in the country) and availability of low-cost Internet access on mobiles has definitely contributed to this shift. The now-pervasive use of social media and people's quick adoptation to new ways of buying things through e-commerce have ...

The announcement claims that the Yahoo! India network reaches over 80 percent of all Indian internet users, citing a Comscore report from May. [UPDATE] Tough-Talking Jack Ma Admits Acting Unilaterally in Alipay Controversy

Jack Ma, the Alibaba founder and CEO, has finally spoken up and revealed the thought-processes behind his controversial and cavalier transference of Alipay away from the Alibaba Group - a move that left Yahoo (which owns 39% of the Group) embarrassed, and exposed just how in the dark the American firm is about Alibaba's inner workings. In a tough-talking, exclusive interview today with the Chinese-language China Entrepreneur Magazine, Ma admits to unilaterally shifting its online payment platform Alipay away from the Group, with full consent from neither the board of directors ...

Baidu Japan Posts Losses Totaling RMB 700 million since 2008

Baidu Japan Posts Losses Totaling RMB 700 million since 2008

Baidu Search dominates its Chinese homeland, but it's struggling elsewhere - its biggest overseas venture in Japan, Baidu.jp, has filed losses of RMB 700 million (US$108.3 million) since 2008. Baidu Japan actually opened in 2007, but required a relaunch in '08 after a shaky start. Those accumulated losses seem to have been sunk into general running and admin costs. The Japanese search engine market is dominated by Yahoo, although Yahoo search is now powered by Google in Japan. This graphic, from SearchEngineWatch.com, reveals that Yahoo Japan holds 56.2% of the marketshare ...

The History & Milestones of Alibaba Group [INFOGRAPHIC]

The History & Milestones of Alibaba Group [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Infographic of the day series visually expresses important stories from Asia and the world of technology. It can be difficult to understand the history and milestones of giant corporations. The same applies to Alibaba Group, which runs Alibaba.com, Alipay.com, Alibaba Cloud Computing, Taobao, Tmall.com, and eTao. (Wow, that's quite a long list of services huh?) In the past decade, a lot has happened within the Alibaba Group. We decided that the best way to tell the story of the Alibaba would be to create this timeline infographic that boils down the progression ...

After Suggesting Yahoo Split Up, Jack Ma Divides Taobao in Three

After suggesting at the recent All Things D conference that Yahoo might solve some of its problems by splitting into smaller pieces, Jack Ma has applied this same strategy to his own company. We received a note from Alibaba today alerting us of the move, one that will see e-commerce giant Taobao form three separate companies. The (Three) Tao of Jack We’re told that as of today, these three Alibaba subsidiaries will begin operations as follows: Taobao Marketplace - “China’s leading consumer-to-consumer (C2C) platform” Taobao Mall - “China’s leading business-to-consumer (B2C) shopping site” etao - ...

Yahoo Inc is in advanced talks to exit its joint venture in Japan with Softbank corp, Japan’s number three mobile operator, the Reuters reported. Softbank currently holds 42 percent and if the transfer were to materialize, it would give Softbank major control over Yahoo Japan. P&G and Yahoo launch Brand Style Website in Indonesia

Inspired by Yahoo’s Shine in the U.S, P&G and Yahoo Indonesia launch, Style Factor, a celebrity style guide dedicated to Indonesian women. The site, which is written in Indonesian, contains content on the latest Indonesian and international celebrity news and information on fashion, skincare, haircare and makeup. The site helps build thought leadership for Yahoo and especially P&G. It’s another “connection first, sales later tactic” employed by the brand agency. Last year, we shared how P&G marketed tampons through a site that was catered for teenage girls. There wasn’t any hard ...

Yahoo! Innovates Digital Advertising

Yahoo! Innovates Digital Advertising

In the city of San Fransisco, Yahoo! has come up with an innovative way to advertise. Realising that commuters waiting at bus stops are usually bored waiting for buses that never seem to arrive, they installed 20 interactive screens at Yahoo! themed bus stops around the neighbourhoods in San Fran. Hit the jump for the next advance in advertising. Isn't that the coolest idea ever? If only we had something like that at our own bus stop. Dubbed the Bus Stop Derby, it pits the 20 neighbourhoods against each other in 4 different games, ...

Yahoo Mail Beta offers Social Media Integration

Yahoo Mail Beta offers Social Media Integration

Amelia and I made a trip down to the Yahoo! office yesterday to check out Yahoo! Mail (Beta) and the new Messenger. Let me first establish that I started a Yahoo! account back when I was like, nine. That was when Yahoo! games were still in vogue, auctions were still up, before Hotmail came into my life, and before I abandoned everything and migrated to Gmail. So it was great seeing how Yahoo! was reinventing itself to stay relevant with today's technology. I would liken it to meeting an old friend that ...
