96% of All Page Views in China are Local – Just 4% Away From North Korea

96% of All Page Views in China are Local – Just 4% Away From North Korea

A researcher at Harvard University has calculated that “96 percent of all page views in China are to web sites hosted within China.” This points to both a thriving web scene in China - where you can shop on Taobao whilst watching videos on Youku - but also to the extent of web controls in the country. Harvard fellow Hal Roberts - who specializes in internet filtering circumvention, web surveillance, and hack attacks - came up with the number by combining Google AdPlanner’s list of page views on China’s top 250 ...

Catch Ramadan Prayers Streaming Live on YouTube!

During Ramadan, every Muslim around the world will perform Tarawih prayers every night. This practice recently received a technological boost thanks to YouTube's live streaming video from the Islamic holy land. Through a new cooperation between Google Arabia and the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Information, every Muslim around the world can now enjoy live streaming of Islamic prayers during Ramadan from the Holy Mosque, Masjid Al-Haram. As the largest mosque in the world, and also the sanctuary for the Holy Kaaba, it’s the centerpoint of all Muslim prayer. Tarabzona Abdul Rahman, ...

Voices of Protest Spreading on YouTube in Japan

Voices of Protest Spreading on YouTube in Japan

Earlier today we told you about the Wenzhou train crash in China, and how the Sina Weibo microblog platform is having trouble censoring what has turned out to be a truly huge discussion. The Chinese government’s response to the accident is being criticized in a way that it could not be in traditional media (although some publications are being pretty bold). As you know, just across the water in neighboring Japan, another government is being criticized for responding poorly to its own disaster, the Fukushima nuclear accident. And while few countries ...

Lady Gaga Greets Indonesia on YouTube

Update: The video was produced by Yahoo Indonesia. The Indonesian version of Yahoo OMG site is what Lady Gaga is referring to in the video. Hat tip: April (see comments) Indonesia is a huge Twitter nation and Lady Gaga apparently knows that too. “I always see your very sweet Twitter messages to me to come to Indonesia and I promise I will be coming there soon…” According to Jakarta Globe, Lady Gaga skipped Indonesia on her recently completed Asian tour and took this video (below) in Singapore after seeing the huge ...

YouTube Adds Japanese Machine Transcription

YouTube Adds Japanese Machine Transcription

According to a video posted by Masaru Kamikura, YouTube now supports machine transcription for Japanese language videos, in addition to English. I tried uploading (random) a Japanese video just to test, and indeed there is now a Japanese option for the transcription file in addition to English. I confess though that the machine transcription failed, but that often happens in English too. It is a beta service after all (see picture). Check out the Japanese video below for Masaru’s commentary on the new feature. To get an idea why more Japanese captions ...

Lady Gaga Suspended From YouTube Thanks to Japan’s Media Interactive Inc

Lady Gaga Suspended From YouTube Thanks to Japan’s Media Interactive Inc

Lady Gaga is likely questioning her decision to post her recent video appearance on Japanese television on YouTube. Local media company Media Interactive Inc is the apparent party pooper to have submitted the copyright claim, which then resulted in the suspension of Lady Gaga’s Youtube channel today. For Lady Gaga - or her representatives - to post the video (a medley of her own songs) she’d have to have a digital copy to begin with. Unfortunately for her, whoever gave it to her didn’t warn about usage rights at the time. But ...

How KFC Malaysia Handled a Social Media Disaster

How KFC Malaysia Handled a Social Media Disaster

We’ve been tipped off by @Askaaronlee on a recent social media disaster at KFC Malaysia that was caused by two scandalous videos of several KFC employees. But many might not have realized that such a big problem was brewing at KFC Malaysia since the fast food chain’s PR folks, in my opinion, did a pretty good job in handling the case. The social media disaster started last October when someone sent a video clip to KFC Malaysia that shows a staff member tampering with the food while preparing it. We did a ...

YouTube has been a great marketing channel for movies like Expendables, Fast Five and many others. The songs of the movie are twisty and addictive, and they're creating buzz both online and offline. The jukebox looks like a typical YouTube video at first glance, but a closer look ...
